I forgot about that, that was my original (and by original, I mean the first idea I ever had for an automatic spudgun three years ago) idea I had, albeit on a far larger scale. Much larger. The shells were to be the size of a standard spray 'n pray chamber.

And why waste energy piercing the cartridge, when you can simply use contacts that go to a spark gap?

JSR is not from the UK. I am, but that's not the problem.

Even in the States, using a solid propellant can put something into the realm where it needs to be registered and licensed.

However, the primary reason we don't talk about it is because of a man that USED to go by the name of Ryan Meerdink - I say used to, because there wasn't much left of him after he tried messing with multiple ounces of smokeless powder and PVC pipe.
Given how stupid people can be, we absolutely do not want to even hint at it, because someone will get it into their head that it's a good idea and subsequently injure or kill themselves.

If you want to talk about it, then it shouldn't be done on a forum full of PVC launcher pictures, because someone will make connections they shouldn't - even if you think you've put clear warnings on it, someone WILL get the wrong (exploding) end of the stick.

Ryan Meerdink was not on these forums, although if he had been, he'd probably still be alive today, because we could have told him not to do anything so stupid.

I know JSR is not in the UK - I know exactly where he lives. Out of respect for him, I will not be telling you where though.

I however, am in the UK, and he was referring to a situation I was talking about - I do have an interest in getting them into the UK. Thing is, JSR knows a considerable amount about firearms law the world over.

I could say you're not allowed to import chimeras or blivets into the United States, but it doesn't mean I have to have an interest in getting mythological creatures into the US or that I have to live there to know you're not allowed to own a poiuyt.
Mind you, you're not able to own a blivet anywhere in the world, but that's fine, because they're very hard to come by.

~~~~~
But anyway, I hope that makes it clearer why we don't talk about these things on this forum. It would be fine to do it on a muzzle loader or DIY firearms forum, but we don't want more incidents where solid propellants and PVC are mixed.
Most of the rules like that are a mixture of safety and legal reasons. We tell you not to shoot other people because it's dangerous and because it could land you in trouble with the police.
We don't allow discussion of spudgun hunting mostly because spudguns are neither accurate nor powerful enough to ensure a clean humane kill - and in many parts of the world it's illegal as well.
Same goes for solid propellants. It's not safe without prior experience, and it is a very legally ambigious area that PCGUY doesn't want to have to cop the legal crap for - remember if something goes tits up, it's the site owner, not the individual poster that gets the trouble.
In the end, you are PCGUY's guest on this forum (he can remove you if he wants) and as such, it's only proper to follow his rules, whether you agree with them entirely or not - and after all, you did agree to follow them when you signed up.
JSR takes quite an interest in UK politics for fear it might one day be exported to his own country of residence, however he is not actually from or living there ;)
For completeness' sake, this is Ryan Meerdink.
His unfortunate demise drives the point home that our hobby, if approached incorrectly, can be lethal. Anything we can therefore do to discourage inappropriate experiments leaves our consciences clear and hopefully, our hobby and its enthusiasts intact.
It's also unfortunate that whoever wrote the article and that "Division Chief of the Sioux Falls Fire Department" either A) don't know what they are talking about or B) purposefully distorted the the potato gun picture for full effect in the wake of disaster, or C) both.
Not to diminish our real and legitimate safety concerns for the hobby, but they did seem to give the impression that everyone sooner or later is going to load up with black powder and light the fuse, so to speak.
That always pisses me off..... 'If your child has a potato gun, get rid of it....' Nonsense. Punish the majority because of the minority with the mental handicap. By mental handicap, I don't mean retardation, I mean being stupid enough to think PVC can handle magic dust. That's a mental handicap if I ever saw one. And it quickly becomes a physical handicap, unfortunately.
I've seen enough people believe it's possible. I've had comments on the HEAL video that can have only been posted by a half wit (and which have promptly been deleted).
If you want REAL mental retardation though, just check out UK politics.
Zing! Political humour! :tongue3:
Back when spudtech still existed somebody took a flaregun and modded it to use shot shell primers and .177 BBs, would punch a BB through almost anything.
Yeh, for legality reasons powder propellants aren't encouraged here. BTW, from a more legal point of view, depending on country etc. guns (powder) must be folded/arranged to a gun shape and have a certain barrel length etc.
