Building first BBMG, need advice

Unread postAuthor: Kazakune » Thu Feb 19, 2009 1:33 pm

OK I just recently acquired an interest in this particular field so I'm not fully informed. My experiences thus far include loading and shooting.

I do however have the needed technical skills to build one myself I just need info on parts and certain other things.

I'm wanting to build a BBMG similar to those featured on Monty's Miniguns, though not as large.

I need to know where to get barrels of varying lengths and bore sizes, trigger, bolt and block assemblies as well.

or a semi-automatic trigger and bolt setup that would fire as fast as the trigger is pulled, I'm sure I can do something with that.

If I'm asking too much in wanting these specific items that, "can be looked up easily" then just give me ideas to search. If I could easily find the items I wouldn't have asked in the first place. I just don't know what to search for. Everything I've tried comes up useless.....

I don't quite understand. Do you want to make a minigun, bb machine gun, or a semi-auto strafer?

Anyway, basically all the info you will ever need is in the showcases and discussions. Just check there.

I'm wanting to make a small minigun. Small enough to fit on a large RC car (1/8 or 1/5 scale)

Like a multi-barrel gun?

Miniguns are VERY hard to make.
You need to be very skilled at building and designing pneumatic cannons and you'll also need a machine shop.

easyest way is to take a small piece of pvc with your ammos OD(use bbs) and attack to a pill bottle with a hole in the middle. Fill the lid with the hole and barrel up with epoxy so its all smooth. Not attack a quick connect on the other side, make it air tight with epoxy and fill with bbs, and tada, a little mini(the quick connect attaches to a compressor). It is very simple but shoudl work for your purposes. To have more shots just sclae thigns up.

Psycix is right, people who make miniguns are extremely talented at weapon making. Multi barrel automatic weapons are very finicky and require lots of time and patience. people spend months or even years simply designing them. To top it all off, they are very expensive. These are not $20 toys. These are really powerful and can cost thousands to build.

I would start with what John suggested, a cloud BBMG. Look in the Wiki for info.

I don't believe you're describing a minigun. This is a minigun.

I understand that they are pretty difficult to make, I do have access to a machine shop but I also have an idea to make one a little easier.

If you just look at the basic parts needed, it can be done on a more rudimentary scale than the $4000 + miniguns you can buy.

3-4 barrels mounted to a cog, attach a tab or some other means to depress a trigger button directly onto the outside edge of the cog near each barrel. Make sure both the actual trigger and the tab meet where the barrel lines up with the chamber. The only thing I reall need is a semi-automatic bb gun (minus baller and modify trigger some) that will fire as fast as you can pull the trigger. Once this is built the fire rate is just a matter of how fast a motor I want to use to spin the barrels.

I'm working on a good diagram to illustrate this I'll post it when I'm done (not very blessed in the technical drawing area)

Yes, it can be done, but if you just want a semi-auto gun, try JSR's blow-forward breech.

That would work as a firing valve, but how were you planning on reloading each barrel in terms of projectiles?

And a four barreled cloud? Thank ight work as the bb's would go into each barrl and so oyu coudl have quiete a few shots with the right amount of bb's.

A cloud's rate of fire is high enough as it is. Four barrels will just draw even more air.

Kazakune,
Are you using ONE chamber (how will you seal this)? Or one per barrel?
How will you be filling them?
From what will you be filling them?
Will the air feed be constant or interrupted on the right moments?
What kind of valve(s) will you use?
How will you load the projectiles?
How will you seal this loading mechanism?
Answer that and you can start building right away.

One chamber
Preferrably a constant air flow interrupted by the bolt (less chance of messing up the timing).
The loading is a problem, I was thinking about taking a look at how the miniguns load BBs and see if I can come up with something from that.
If I can use the bolt to interrupt the air flow I won't need to seal the loading mechanism, just attach it.

The simplest solution in my opinion would be to make a normal cloud BBMG with the BBs inside the chamber, and instead of having it feed into rotating barrels instead of a single fixed one.

Some discussion you might some useful here ;)
