Airsoft foam rocket launcher air magazine and valve advice

Unread postAuthor: Stozzer » Sat Feb 27, 2010 11:19 am

Lo all (first post!)

I have put together an airsoft panzerfaust 3 replica which fires a foam rocket by hacking a air burst rocket launcher
http://www.amazon.com/William-Mark-Corporation-WMCAB001-Rocket/dp/B00019RB7K

Image

The air tank is removed by unscrewing the tyre valve, compressing the tank with a bike pump, then rescrewed in and fired. I did it in this way to allow the use of multiple tanks (as each tank is a one shot deal)

It is currently a airburst rocket unit connected to a 10Bar inline valve which is connected to a modified deodorant can.

The air burst system and modified air tank both connect to the valve via a modified adaptor that came with an blow gun such as below.

http://www.toolshopdirect.co.uk/item.php/site/froogle/sn/BG01S

I want to replace the modified adaptors with something more durable, as i have found that unscrewing it to compress the tank and then rescrewing it has damaged the thread on the adaptor.

What i would really like to do is replace the entire tank and connection system to the valve.

I have decided to use 16 bar pressure rated pipe (i will only be compressing it to 9bar) for the air tank.

So i have two questions:

1) What thread would the air valve have (i am assuming 1/8 NPT?)((i have searched for a schematic from RS but haven't managed to find one))

2) What would be the best connection method to use bearing in mind that i will be removing it like a magazine (removing an uncompressed tank and replacing with a compressed one.

Many Thanks

I have one of those things and they are a blast to shoot. I ignored the safety warnings and shoulder fired it.....wow! they have so much kick and the foam rocket goes so far!
It will work but your "modified deodrant can" isn't designed for that high pressures you could use PVC chambers instead as the gun is sch 40 and only rated for 160psi. because you could waste air that will give it that extra "oomph"

Good luck anyway.

Edit: Make sure you fill those chambers up enough because the lowest pressure disk bursts at 40 psi and the highest at 150.

The modfiyed deoderant can works fine, but i fear it may break one day and frag me!

I am intending on replacing them with 16 bar pipe chambers pressurised to 120psi (9 bar) which is what i currently pressurise the cans to. The 120psi in the chamber blows the red (40PSI) discs nicely.

The valve i am using is a SMC air valve purchased from RS (rated to 10 bar). Which has the same thread as the blow gun adaptor.

I'm surprised the deoderent can doesn't have a blow out plug in the bottom. No pictures of your cannon to post?

Welcome to Spudfiles. :D

It did, but the way i installed a tyre valve on it was to pour molten pewter into the concave shape at the bottom of the can. then when it had cooled, i knocked it out and machined a hole for the valve to go in.

I then drilled out the blow out plug with a 20mm drill bit, then scored the remaining material with a knife (to give it something to stick to) and used loctite super steel epoxy to glue in the valve and plug.

In the past i have made 3-4 of these with the same method and have never had a blowout. But i feel im pushing my luck a bit and its time to move to some rated materials.
