Airsoft tight bore VS wide bore

Unread postAuthor: wyz2285 » Mon Jul 07, 2014 2:39 pm

I'm planning on getting a VSS vintorez AEG rifle, install the Wolverine kit, make the fake integrated suppressor functional and turn it into one hell of a sniper rifle.
So one thing I haven't decided is which barrel to use. Normally people go for tight bores like PDI or Prometheus but I have read an interesting theory while browsing through Polarstar forums. Apparently (from what I read) wide bore barrels provides better accuracy because the air around the BB forms a tunnel preventing it from bouncing irregularly inside the barrel and as the polar star fusion engine can provide almost unlimited air flow so no worries about losing FPS.
A couple l individuals on the forum affirmed that they got better results when switched to Orga/Miracle wide bore barrels from PDI barrels.
Any thoughts?

Any documented group size results? The theory is absolute poppycock.

By the way, the King Arms VSS is just beautiful and shoots like a dream!

i know things are are different with homemade airguns but so far i tested like 20 m of different pipes all of them crashing at a moment.... i had the best accuracy ever with aluminium pipes that i mounted on my both guns. I could of hit my my targets like nevere before with no matter what bb's i used.
The thing with this pipe was that it was tighter than 6 mm. the bb didn't roll down the barrel...it actually had a resistance and friction ..........Now both guns shoot extremly bad.....after @3000-4000 bbs. So i got a 6mm steel high quality pipe ..the bb roll down it...and it shoots no way like what i had before............sorry for my bad english !

so i am wondering ...if to get another steel pipe (may be that one had some issues) or to buy an airsoft steel barrel......

@Jack As all forums where are people who claim to have done 60m+ shots, no actual evidences. Tight bore it is then, however who would buy these Orga/Miracle barres then? They are even more expensive than Prometheus/PDI barrels.
I found the king arms VSS, a bit expensive for what I'm going to do though as all the internals will be thrown away, plus I'm not a big fan for real woods.
@Bravootome I have some brass airsoft barrel laying around with no use, I can give you if you want.

Thought so.

Rifled paintball barrels clearly don't work, have you seen this video from a manufacturer?

The paintballs claimed to be rotated by rifling are clearly not rotating at all around the axis of projectile travel, it's so obvious I'm surprised it's even on the website.

Still, people buy them and claim to be happy with the results! These people are about as scientific as wine tasters!

They are even more expensive than Prometheus/PDI barrels.

The more money you've spent on something, the less likely you are to report it as being bad.

Ah, going for the gas conversion? The KA is made for an 11.1V lipo in the suppressor, really shoots well as-is. The wood is a laminate just like the real thing.

True.

Good point :p

Can't bear the noisy motor and piston, going to install the Wolverine, it's like a cheaper version of Polarstar. Lmainate wood is nice, although drill a hole in it for the air hose is a bit more painful

i dont know if i am right or no, but i had rifled a Al. bad barrel that wasn't shooting good any more. I rifled the last 5-8 cm of it with an auger ( dint do it correctly ...just some scratches ....)...now the barrel shoots straight again...so i can hit again a can by 25-30 m with a 0.25 bb. ........

i had rifled a 6 mm Aluminmium pipe (@ 10 cm of it) and the accuracy changed way better. i wasn't sure it was the rifling thanks to.....
so i had few shoots up into a chrismas tree (> 30 -40 m) and i was able to see the bb ( a 0.40 g graphit bb) It was moving exactly like pellets does - spinning inside a tunnel but keeping trajectory .
i did shoots before in that tree but bbs were flying like UFO's before hitting anything .......
I am talking about my QEV. It shoots better to my 40 m paper target with platic bbs than the Hammer valve airgun with a steel airsoft barrel and shooting steel bb's........

Interesting, so rifled barrel works with bbs, as soon as there is no hop-up.

i was actually thinking it would or must work cuz airrifles (not airsoft's) does use lead bbs ...anyhow an important factor is is the very tight bore barrel, the bb didnt roll off the barrel, i did actually pushed it with a stick along the barrel to notice the resistance...
Conclusion is that with this barrel- very tight bore...i had extreme accuracy even with light ammo like 0.25 grams bbs. Any how this 0.2 euro alumin pipe barrel is far better than a 22 euro steel barrel............i never tested hop up sistems cuz i dont use my "toys" for airsoft(regarding the power) and i use a variety of ammunition .................................................................................................................

Had a tight aluminium barrel, caused a breech explosion. Stopped using it after the incident.

i use 3 layers of outer barrels very well assambled, so it has no vibrations or override..........
now that the winter is getting close the guns doesnt shoot the same...i must wait till the sun is up and the temperature is over 10 C......

Why is that? Do you use co2?

no, i use a fridge comp. with air. but i think the barrel contracts or maybe bend....cuz with all this accuracy, yesterday i tested it in the early morning (-3 c) and missed a A4 papier by 20 m . This is unacceptaple for me.. (rightaway i said - must get an rifled barrel...) but when it wormed up..it was shooting fine again...

Dunno is there are 6mm rifled barrel. Why not 5.5mm air rifle barrel? Hatsan and Gamo have some cheap ones
