Seen it, do NOT like what I saw.

Highly complicated and, quite frankly insane. I do not even want to fathom the cost of those components. And those schematics were ass ugly from the standpoint of someone who has to BUILD them.

But if it could be delivered more cheaply, with a smaller package, I would use it in a heartbeat. But my current dilemma that I am working on at this very moment is the possibility of wiring an RC servo gyroscope up as an input to a microcontroller to jerry-rig some kind of simple inertial navigation system, possibly in concert with an accelerometer..

These cardboard-and-petri dish robots we're using in class can't go straight or constant worth anything. My kingdom for a stepper motor.

A laser rangefinder would be a nice addition but impractical in my case, I don't intend to use this at more than a few metres range where projectile drop will be insignificant. Also, I would be useless in the programming aspect of tying range data with targeting input

A small aside, to give an idea of scale this is what over 20,000 1mm BBs look like comapred to 10,000 3mm BBs:

My heart says DO WANT but my brain says JAMJAMJAMJAMJAM. How on earth are you going to handle feed issues on that small scale?

I figured that if I scale doen the vortex block design there won't be any feed issues.

Edit: looks like sentry software guy has tried his hand at making a BBMG :)

I laughed hard when the cap blew out. Until then it seemed like a good idea.

Update on this project, so far I have practically everything I need except the all important servos. The set I ordered over a month ago seems to have fallen through and should be refunded, in the meantime I ordered three ofthese with 75% more torque than my original order, let's hope they arrive soon.

Yesterday I received the paintball fill nipples which means I have all the parts to make the actual gun, I'll try and get started on it tonight.

I wonder how well would it work on a moving platform (if you know what I am talking about :D )

A simple remotely controlled turret would probably be better but at least you wouldn't have to take your hands off the steering wheel

hehe well we know that wouldn't work, the software can only detect motion against a stationary background.

It would make an interesting car alarm though :D

Using on the move would require a passive infra-red seonsor, and relying on it to locate a heat source rather than use the change in the background to locate targets. An ultrasonic rangefinder based system woud be similar to that, only using only one Z level's worth of data though for comparisons, and using change in depth to locate potential targets as well as aiming points.

If I had the time and money, fair enough, but in practice this will be a lot more fun:

Bit of an update, Prototype No.2 - conventional vortex block strafer type this time as per original concept- curing as we speak, to be tested within the next few days.

Edit: see some initial testing >>here<< :D

Here it is mocked up with the ammunition for comparison, all up weight so far is 110 grams but it still needs the trigger servo

Finally, we has servos!

It will be a couple of weeks before I can work on this though as I'll be away for the Easter holidays :)

Bit of an update on this, hooked everything up and servos refused to budge. It all seems to be wired up correctly and the right LEDs are flashing on the controller, my guess is that the 4 AA batteries don't have the cojones to make the heavy duty servos work. I've ordered some lesser servos to see if it makes a difference, if that works then I'll either gear the latter or find a better power supply for the original servos.
