I thought about that but mount it on a moving platform and the software sees the whole image as movement and the turret goes insane.

There could be a simple solution... Keep the turret servos 'off' by default. Find some facial/body recognition software and have it scan the moving camera image. When it gets a hit, have it cut power to the bot and turn the turret power on.

It's a good brute-force approach to take but you still couldn't have it moving fire while moving. The only real way to do that would be software that controls the turret using a 'human form' tracker, and even that would be prone to attacking Jesus statues and Justin bieber posters.

I love it!

now put some creapy noises on it, and it is complete.

And for the valve, isn't a solenoid better and simpler? (does cost more however)

The spread is quite large. Is there any chance on changing it, or do you like it that way?

No objections :D

You just answered your own question ;)

The spread is quite large. Is there any chance on changing it, or do you like it that way?

A heavier, steadier mount would solve the problem, but that is not feasible while using the servos directly as opposed to the geared mount as proposed in the turret kit sold by the software source.

Plenty of them in the following sequence ;) First bit shows the turret itself following the mouse pointer and "firing" on direct command, and next is an automatic targeting firing test. For safety reasons the target area was defined as roughly the area seen in the video, so the target was only tracked and engaged within that area.

The targeting was reasonably successful, but I was let down by the reliability of the BBMG itself, it's mostly firing bursts of air at the target.

I see your point but If you compare the time it took me to earn that $150 to the time I would have spent trying to figure it out on my own, it's a bargain
I see your point too but I am pretty sure that sooner or later someone will create an open source software + programme for arduino controlled autonomous turret (if it doesn't exist already)

lol I found one -> http://www.instructables.com/id/Autonom ... 2/Arduino/

It even has those gayinsh portal voices that you like so much :D

hmmm well maybe it is time to up the calibre ? 6mm would be ideal (HINT a hop-up unit + solenoid valve  )

Kid Rock WIN!

hehe good find! and it seems a lot less nervous than mine :D though I han't imagine rolling big targets around the garden :)

You can change the sound with the software I have, the possibilities are endless :D

Upping the calibre means full size turret, I'm still determined to fiddle with the 1mm "sandblaster" for now.

I've tried the open-source software and I also have the software from The Sentry Project. I have to say, while they may seem sort of similar at first glance the sentry project's software is far, far more advanced and actually works well in scenario games. They have a free trial link right on their home page for you to play around with I believe. I'm normally an advocate of free stuff myself but I needed software that wasn't total crap for the pb field I manage. I found the stuff below on their site. It looks like they updated it recently.

I've closed an eye to the thinly veiled promotion in this thread, after all it's a good product which I've tried and have no problem endorsing, and in any case it's not a product which any of the sponsors of this forum offer.

nope. I read my old posts. I still don't see how you are making such an assumption...

the thinly veiled promotion
Yeah, right

Steppers are stupid for automated turrets. I'm so tired of people wanting to use steppers.
:)

Yeah I know I know you're just a guy who has build a completely different autonomous turret... :D

Anyway... I've tested your programme...

ohh AFAIK it (the programme) can be used with an arduino board - well if you write a code that interprets commands send over serial and controls the position of steppers/rc servos/servos

It is not just a coincidence that you never see automated sentries with steppers. Some people just need to learn the hard way I guess.

if I understand it correctly the board you provide just changes the signals sent from the computer into signals that are sent to RC servos....

RC servos make it easier for you but it doesn't mean thaey offer the kind of accuracy that some ppl would like

Got it backwards PS...

The problem with steppers, is that when "loaded"...as in fast moving then reversing....they can miss steps. They don't regain those lost steps either... if it continues, the thing will be WAY behind where it's supposed to be.

Can you say "Lost zero"?

Servos have position sensors...they KNOW where they are at all times.

I think this was the conclusion we came to a while ago in this thread.

Sentry turret capable of tracking small fast targets -> servos

Sniper/artillery turret capable of hitting a point/slow moving target/coordinate -> stepper motors
