inline vortex feeding problem

Unread postAuthor: singularity » Sun Jul 29, 2007 3:08 pm

well i just tested my new HALF HOLE vortex gun only to find out the spring was still to strong and was jamming the bbs .i made a full hole that didn't have shrouds and it would only fire when there was like 500 or less rounds in the chamber, i thought it was becuase there were no shrouds but this one does the same thing (which means i spent a week gluing and waiting for it to dry for nothing). so what i need is a new spring and i have literally made springs from every gauge wire i have and none of them work. so i would like to know what type and gauges of wire have worked for people? or do you use some sort of manufactured spring?

ps - i have noticed that the gun actually gets more accurate as i fire it (similar to the support gun in Bf2142 if any one has played it) like for the first few seconds its just kinda a spray then it slow turns into a perfectly straight line...:? does this happen to anyone else? im using a 6.04 tight bore is that whats causing it?

Maybe its because the bbs are just starting to flow in a vortex fashion. I may be wrong, I never built a vortex, but am planning to do so.

my old one didn't get more accurate as it fired. of course that gun was just kinda thrown together no special ordering barrels, cam locks, ect. its just kinda an odd... thinks its some kind of self induced back spin or something?

Maybe, my golf ball gun has so much backspin i can shoot any direction and it will stay straight until it i cant see it anymore. Sometimes I can shoot down over my cliff and it will curve up a little. You can hear like a hiss sound from the backspin moving all the air :p. I shot a chunky golf ball and it went all over the place. Maybe try smoother bbs or a different brand. Or the bbs may be hitting the barrel as they come out and be unstable. It might be your barrel too. I switched from a copper barrel to a part of a knitting needle and accuracy went from just spraying everywhere to a nice little 2" area on my cloud.

EDIT: Also, it might be the speed of the bbs which effects the accuracy, I shot my cloud today and at 20 PSI it just sprays but at 125 PSI its pretty nice

well im using high polished .25g BBs so i don't think its the BBs. and the problem isn't that its inaccurate its a hole lot more accurate than my other vortex (20ft grouping at 150 ft with the old one) i bet i could get like 3ft grouping with this one. its just odd that it get more accurate as it fires, any way back on topic i need a weak spring....

hmmm, maybe you could soften or harden the metal the change the strength of an existing spring.

You could make your own spring which is what I did for my vortex gun. What you do is get some black iron wire which is used in making firearm springs. Then you have to coil your spring around something and coil it close together, about a 1/4" between each coil. Make sure it is in the EXACT shape you want before you move on to the next step. Heat up the spring until it is glowing, or almost glowing red hot. While the spring is still very hot, pick it up with tongs or something and put it immediately in a bucket of water. This makes the spring brittle and it will break if bent. Next, put the spring in a metal bucket and pour oil into the bucket. Make sure the spring is completely submerged in the oil, and then use a blow torch or welding torch to ignite the oil. It may take a while for the oil to catch on fire, but when it does, it really does catch on fire! After the oil has burnt away take your spring out of the bucket and it is ready to use. My dad used to make gun springs in a gunsmith shop and he is the one who taught me to do this.

nice thanks but i have one question, does oil (engine oil i would assume) give of thick smoke when burnt?

go to miachels, or any craft store.

go to the jewlery-making section and buy "memory" wire. it is essentially giant lengths of spring. it can be bent with pliers, and is not very strong, but ts hard to make a nice coil. mabey a square spring will do............

anyway i made a spring out of that stuff for a magazine feeder once, and it worked beautifuly...........

why dont you just cut like an inch off your spring. it will still be the same strength but further away?

i done that once.

no even if the hopper is like 1/2 it still jams, the wire i used is just like to big of a gauge i think. cutting an inch off might let me get in another 500 round but thats like half and it will be gone in a few seconds

Maybe the bbs get more acurate because they are in a cloud affect untill the air starts going in a vortex. What psi are you running it at? Matbe try higher pressure to get the effect to start quicker?

Maybe you could put a small motor in the middle of the vortex to get the bbs in a circle quickly?

P.S. I like your signature Oragin Unknown!!

im running it around 90 psi co2 (any higher and the safety pop off will trigger and turn the tank into ice) theres no way im putting a motor in there i mean it works all i need is a weaker spring

Just use without the damn plunger aparatus. Everyone building strafers always thinks they need one, or their gun won't work, then come and say that it doesn't work because the spring is too strong.
I'm not ranting at you in particular, because you've built a few, but at everyone.
