Simple Combustion

Unread postAuthor: SpudBlaster15 » Mon Oct 31, 2011 8:23 pm

Nothing overly exciting here, I simply decided to construct a relatively basic and functional combustion cannon to commemorate the 5 year anniversary of my Spudfiles membership.

Assembly was about as straightforward as it gets (Unless you're a pneub and only deal with pneubmatics; a mentally retarded chimpanzee can build those in his sleep). The chamber was salvaged from the remains of this launcher, which was constructed in October 2007 while I was still living on my acreage. A majority of the other components (Cam locks, meter fittings, ball valves, regulator, chamber fan, etc.) were taken from decommissioned projects or pulled out of parts bins while I was cleaning out my storage shed in preparation for winter. Only the 1.5" barrel, a few ABS fittings, some miscellaneous electrical components, and the small propylene canister (Best onboard fuel supply ever) were required to be purchased.

The cannon itself is rather lightweight and portable, which is highly beneficial given that I no longer have the means to transport an 8ft hybrid, or the ability to test launchers of any form on my property.

This short noisemaker barrel gives the cannon a C:B ratio of about 4:1, making it rather loud with burst disks.

Enjoy, hope I didn't bore anyone to death with this post.

What changed?

Nice cannon, have wanted to build something similar myself to enjoy over summer.

For some reason that looks completely boss sauce with that little stubby barrel. I think BTB's style is rubbing off on me :)

And lol at blatant pneumatic trolling.

It looks like he's moved into some sort of apartment.

Good job, by the way, but what is it with the "pneubmatic" thing?

Good work, but you didn't post a fuzzy picture of the spark gap firing.

Why not?

GF, we'll stop mocking you once you build a hybrid. It only has to be like Qwertys' or Warheads'. As long as it fires.

I haven't built a working hybrid yet either, but I don't go on about it.

while I was still living on my acreage

Horses now infringing on my shooting area, I saposs for 400 a month I could run them off (they bring in 350). Not worth it to me.

What are you using to genarate the spark? It's nice you went the distance on the paint job, not many do...

Well, I haven't actually been able to test any launchers on my property since I moved to a residential area in 2009 (Partially responsible for my hiatus during that year), but earlier this year we sold the only vehicle I had access to which could transport anything over ~5ft in length. Given that walking to test sites has never been an option here, as the neighborhood is loaded with people who would phone the police if I was witnessed carrying a [insert media term for terrorist doomsday device] down the street, this situation has put a fairly significant damper on larger scale projects for the time being.

What was that? I can't hear you over the report of this non-pneumatic cannon. :D

mark.f wrote:Good job, by the way, but what is it with the "pneubmatic" thing?

One of the terms I invented to belittle certain pro-pneumatic/anti-hybrid users on this site.

What could possibly be so interesting about a low current electrical arc jumping a ~1/16" gap between 2 sharpened 10-32 machine screws?

jrrdw wrote:What are you using to genarate the spark?

HV circuit ripped from an electronic BBQ igniter. It's wired to a toggle switch ignition safety, a red LED indicator, and a momentary firing switch on the handle.

That sounds familiar, at least you had previous open air opportunities.

The power source is difficult to explain, so I took the liberty of drawing a quick circuit diagram for you.
