I dont think shortening the gap would make it look better... It would make it harder to hold while firing.

is this design actually effective? Even though it looks cool like that, i have to wonder if the energy is being channeled efficiently?

There is no paint on his gun.

The 180* bend does reduce flow, but not enough to make a difference. The design allows you to use a longer barrel for a given chamber length, which will give you more power than an inline launcher of equal length.
