Israeli Thunder Generator

Unread postAuthor: Biopyro » Tue Jan 19, 2010 3:04 pm

Another invention we've been doing for years, which the Israeli military has doubtless paid thousands for;
The Thunder Generator

It's basically a vortex cannon though. I don't really see how this is going to be an effective form of riot control. If people are rioting 15m away, what is holding them back? Temporary fences don't work, so really it has to be police - meaning that your own forces are in the firing line.

The only way I can see this being useful is being used in a property with a chain link fence holding back "rioters". Any thoughts?

So for the big question:
How does it exactly work so that we can adapt the technology for our own use or build our own.

I must say, the design of the barrel is not typical of a vortex cannon (youtube). I was definitely expecting a more conical shape.

Could it really manage a Mach 6 vortex as popsci claims?

Now things really start to get interesting... what gives it this kind of shockwave?
LPG+O2 mixture ignited under pressure like a hybrid?
DDT?
Do the insides have a special shape to guide the gases or the shockwave?
Is it a single combustion or is it a repeating row, like a pulse jet?

Questions questions.... :roll:

The article says NEAR-mach-6, but still, its fast for a shockwave traveling through air.

How can you say it wouldn't work for riot control? I wouldn't feel very safe if it was pointed at me. I'll look for a patent..

"So the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) searched for a 0.22 caliber accurate rifle that will be used to take out the key protest leaders by shooting them in the legs."
Holy crap. In Israel you get shot for protesting.

If I remember my gas dynamics correctly, the speed of a shock is related to the strength of the shock. As such, to claim that you have a Mach 6 shock is a direct declaration of the power of the weapon (for those who know how to read between the lines).

Well, these are the sort of people who will throw stones at the most heavily armoured tank in the world.

@boyntonstu
well yeah but if you had done something like that you would be so hardcore :wink:

anyway to some extend the closer you are the safer you are.. at least when it comes to tanks

even if they kill 10 or 50 each day they will lose anyway... the Palestinians will swarm them... and either they will give up or they will go bankrupt trying to fend them off

that's the result of the so called pussyfication of the west...

Well, these are the sort of people who will throw stones at a device that produces mach 6 shockwaves. :roll:

Or not.

On the contrary, I see Israel as one of the bastions against "pussyfication". They fought hard to get their state and they're certainly not going to give it up so easily, since 1948 they've managed to hold back their militant neighbours with amazing tenacity (and a bit of healthy US backing).

Besides, they have nukes, will the West allow them to be overrun and let someone with an "I'm taking you swine with me" attitude push the button?

Anyway, this is getting rather political, vortex cannons, yes? :)

This seems more of an area denial/defence device in fixed mutually supporting positions, rather than something that would actually be mounted on a riot control vehicle.
