Another thing, sooo much violent crime is drug-related. If I remember correctly, in the city of Cincinnati, a city i live near to, something like 97% of all homocides since the 1970s were drug-related. Even in the rough neighborhoods, the chances of a random person on the street getting shot are lower than them being hit by a car, (though admitadley higher than getting hit by a meteorite) Very Happy I asked a police officer once, and he said almost all of the crime happened at the suburban malls, not in the inner-city. Anyway, going back to the point, most of the gun violence is drug deals gone bad.

@ Psy:
We're talking about firearms in this particular topic.
All the other topics already explain spudguns.

Very Happy

You might as well have asked me to explain hotglue guns
Designed to stick stuff

And please Jack...don't start on blowguns...

or I would have to bring up Britney Spears

I think it's the duality that makes them so appealing..the firearms I mean.

I disagree completely. A gun IS a Talisman. It is an object that protects the possessor. Openly carried it may not even need to be activated to provide a form of protection.

The reason for that, Solar, is because those other people think of it as a talisman, and not the wielder.

Alright, time for me to sound off here:

Firearms, are defined (at least in the USA) as any device capable of shooting a round with the aid of explosives. Also, any type of muffler for the the above is said to be a firearm. (weird i know...)

So, by definition combustion cannons ARE firearms in the USA
but, any police officer you talk to will tell you that as long as they are used for recreational perposes on private property, the are not considered firearms.

Alright, enough side notes....

Firearms, whatever the type, are simply tools. When placed into the hands of an expert, a gun can be a tool of pure evil, or a tool of sport.
But without the hands of the expert, it remains a tool. much like a hammer.

If the USA was to ban the public from owning firearms, (unikley)
One could simply make you own, from parts easily found at a hardware store.

So, if
steel pipe and springs = firearm
firearm = steel pipe and springs.

Last time i checked, no one was afraid of steel pipe and springs.

An air/gas mixture isn't an explosive, it just burns really fast. If we have detonation it usually produces less than desired effects because it is too quick for our purposes. So, you can safely say that the combustion (burn) cannon is not a 'definition' firearm.

if an air gas mixture burning really fast is NOT an explosion, wouldn't a solid propellent "exploding" just be burning really fast?

[Pedantic] Solid propellants in firearms do not detonate, and an "explosion" is not necessarily a detonation. The word "explosion" does not even imply that a chemical reaction or phase change has occurred, and it is nearly useless in any technical context. It seems like "explosion" is used whenever the writer is not interested in producing an accurate description, or when he is trying to deliberately obscure some fact which is relevant, but inconvenient for his purposes. [/Pedantic]

You obviously haven't visited my town post-06/11/08... Rolling Eyes

On the topic, I have to agree that firearms have become a noticeable political issue recently, mostly as a result of knee-jerk legislation and the lobbying of "anti-gun advocates" (syn. communists). Guns themselves, however, are not the true issue for any but the most dimwitted of those involved in the cause, on either side. Only the fools fail to see past the surface of the issue and truly believe that firearms in general are anything more than ergonomic, relatively accurate projectile launchers.
