Throughout my time here, I have praised ABS as a cannon construction material. However, today, I advise anyone who has built a DWV ABS cannon of any kind to throw it away now, because there is a good chance this will happen to you after some time.
I was out firing my advanced combustion, and upon pressing the igniter for the first time, the end cap exploded, and a blast of hot air burned all of the hair off my left arm. I looked down, and a large crack had formed along the length of the chamber. Upon closer examination, 2 additional large cracks had formed in the 4" female adapter.

I am glad I wasn't holding PVC in my hands when this happened, because I would be in the ER having shrapnel removed from my flesh.
I don't plan to give up, but I am not sure exactly what I am going to do now. |

| Erm, yeah, so doesn't that mean it was a flaw in design or contruction and not the material? I would continue to use ABS if I were you. (At least as long as they do that, lol) ER doesn't sound like fun, and neither does death. |

Thats true and false. What type of PVC? Pressure rated PVC you will be fine..DWV/Down pipe is another story. And then who's to say PVC DWV has a higher chance of exploding? It may shrapnel but its got to explode first.
Just make sure your more specific next time before another heated discussion begins. |

Actually if it was made out of pvc this would not have been an issue as pvc is stronger. |

| No, I believe the components were defective. Should I have been holding a defective PVC component in my hands, I would be in the ER. |

I'm glad this happened, as a matter of fact! Thank you for saving me tons of hassle if a cannon I sold to someone exploded like yours! I'm not especially happy your gun blew (it was pretty cool), but I'm glad I know about it now.
Alright everybody, I'm not trying to sound like a dick/jerk/combination of random bad things to be, but have I not stated that DWV ABS is not as good an option as PVC?
SpudBlaster, I know you think it was defective compnents that failed, but the pipe itself also cracked. |

It seems strange that the pipe and fittings both failed on the same shot. Possibly defective, but I really don't know.
I was growing tired of firing this launcher, so I may remove the propane meter and use it on a small marble firing hybrid I have been planning to build. |

A 4x hybrid made of unrated ABS, hmmm, I would tend to agree with you there.
My intention was to use Sch 40 steel for the hybrid's chamber. |

| Meh, DWV pipe isn't rated for pressure, ergo there is always a chance of it failing no matter what. The odds with ABS are prety good though, you just got unlucky. |

I don't think you can say there is anywhere near "a good chance this will happen to you" after one outlying incident.
That is the type of statement that can only be made from lots of testing/data collection. |
