Hello everyone I'm a new member of this site, I am fascinating by the spud gun cannon hobby and i want to make an advanced cannon for under 100 dollars as i am on a budget right now. I was thinking of a 4in chamber, 25in long with either a golf ball, tennis ball, or plain'ol 2in barrel of possibly even all these setups with interchangeable barrels. I want to get the most bang for my buck and make a powerful potato cannon. |

If you have no experience in spuding. I recommend you start with a Hair Spray powered spud gun. These are easy and realy affordable. (You can actually build 2 with 100$!!!). But if you can always dare to start off with a propane powered one if you wish. The thing is, if you want to build one like that, you will have to go shoping and find the best prices. Make yourself a list, mostly for the parts required to make the propane meter and regulator. I you want to build a cheap but efficent propane meter, build one like mine.
Here's the meter. I used 1/2 copper pipe with valves that has tightning collars and the valve on the left is 1/4 turn open. The one on the left needs about 3-4 turns to open the valve fully. This alows you to control the pressure.

I do have experience with the spray and pray hairspray spud guns but i wanted more power. I have done quiet a bit of research on these advanced combustion guns and they seem much more powerful. How powerful is yours SGT milk? thanks for the pics.  |

Yeah I would also go with pneumatic for a first... just because they are far less complicated and require no fuel. Can build a pneumatic for 15 bucks too! How's that for a budget?  |

Hmm, well there not always cheaper. For the large bore you want to make a pneumatic will likely be much more expensive than an advanced combustion, of similar performance. Meaning that a piston valve would be required. This also means it will NOT be less complicated.
Though provided you are creative with materials available to you you will possible be able to create something more powerful and cheaper.
You can build a pneumatic for $15 but it will be much smaller than a 2" barrel.
A modified sprinkler valve may be easer than working out metering setups and stichometric ratios. |

yeah but portability and quick reload time usually cost a lot more in a pneumatic, and if you want to get decent power on a larger bore you will most likely spend just as much or more on a pneumatic. |

| I know i can get more power out of a pneumatic but the problem is that i don't have a compressor and if i were to buy one portability will be an issue. And I don't think pumping up a dual chambered air cannon with a bike pump will be too efficient... |

Yeah, it will be far quicker and cheaper for that size caliber. Simply if your after power, pneumatic is the way to go. I really only meant it as a side comment.
As said before you'll really have to do research as to what components you will be using and to where they'll come from. Other wise costs may start to run away. |

| For a cheap propane meter i was thinking of pvc instead of brass. I think it will do the job. How many ft/lbs do think i could get out of this set-up? |

I haven'T tested the range on mine but i know I can easily get 100yards.

Pneumatic can also be a good solution too but if you want to build one that shoots projectiles as big as mine with ranges about the same as mine, you will have to make a piston valve which I think is alot more complicated. You need more tools to make these, moslty a dremel. I think you should stick up with a propane canon.
The difference between combustion and pneumtic is that you get that awsome Bang with combustion cannons and also that flame at the end of the barrel when you shoot it at night. Because of the sound it makes, I freaked out my neighboors with my propane canon when I shot it. |

Easier to build (compared to an advanced combustion), has the potential to be more powerful...all kinds of stuff. | the truth is on a 1.5-2" bore cannon you have to either buy a large size sprinkler valve, or build a piston valve(or raise the pressure which means more pumping) to match or exceed the power of an advance combustion which will carry nearly the same power, and is much better as far as portability goes(considering he doesn't have a compressor)
