A TEENAGER has been charged and his two friends arrested after firing a homemade pipe gun in Wagga Wagga.
Police were called to Captain Cook Drive and Willans Hill Reserve at about 2.50pm (AEST) yesterday where an 18-year-old and his two 17-year-old friends, all from Wagga Wagga, allegedly discharged the pipe gun into nearby bushland a number of times.
When police arrived the teens fled the scene, but were soon found in Mimosa Drive.
The 18-year-old has been charged with using a prohibited weapon and was granted bail to appear at Wagga Wagga Local Court on July 9.
The two 17-year-old youths have been spoken to by police and will be dealt with under the Young Offenders Act.
Police seized the homemade pipe gun.
What do you guys reckon? |

Australia quite possibly has the largest area of land per person living there and it's as lame as a half legged pirate that firing an air cannon into a large open space will get you grassed up by curtain twitchers.
In the end it's their fault for not being cautious enough, the law in many areas is an ass and the best thing to do is not to get in a position where it can crap on you. |

| Are you sure this article is about misuse of spudguns? Because homemade "pipe guns" can also be used for live ammunition (pretty much a homemade pistol). |

Amusingly so if you're not australian
I can't find anything but the same copy/paste story in mutiple online reports which only says "pipe gun".
I'd agree that pipe gun could refer to an improvised cartridge gun. I was assuming that it was a spud gun as it was posted here. |

| I naturally assumed spud gun because when I was at Wagga for a day or two I told some people about this hobby. And as for the cops at Wagga they are complete hard @sses. |

Must have been a horribly loud gun... I live in Bayside, Brisbane. In the Redland Shire that's near Starbroke Island and what not. I've always been pretty careful with my guns. I swear they must have been using bullets... Wagga Wagga is country more or less so either they were doing something stupid right near a housing estate, or uses a couple of shells with some gal pipe and a hammer to alert the authorities the way they did.
I'm lucky. I live close to the city and we've only got neighbours on the right hand side. out the front of the house, is an acre. On the side, is 5 acres of spare land.....and down the back (my shooting range:D), is acres of bush no one owns. ....
Next year I'll be moving next to Stradbroke Island on an island called Macleay Island. We don't have neighbours for 200m, there is 100 acres of bush all around.....AND THERE IS NO COPS ON THE ISLAND! |

A 20 min ferry ride in my eyes is definately worth the peace of mind when I get when shooting my guns in the bush . |

I happen to live in Wagga and I can confirm that it probably was a spudgun fired (said it in the paper, but since when has the media been accurate about spudguns)
This actually made front page of the local paper. It says:
'Police rush to Willans Hill, teens arrested after gunshots heard
AMBO CREW IN SHOOTING INCIDENT
Three teenagers were arrested at the end of a short and furious police chase on Wagga's Willans Hill yesterday after a firearm was discharged near ambulance officers training in the area.
The drama erupted just before 3pm when ambulance officers heard a shot being fired and alerted police via radio.
Within minutes, 10 to 12 police officers in several cars descended on the scene and a manhunt began in the bush for three people. The chase then moved to Mimosa Drive and the traffic was stopped on two residential streets to aid police in the arrest of *Continued page 2
On page 2 it reads:
HOME-MADE FIREARM SEIZED
Ambos caught in gunshot drama
three teenagers. A home-made firearm was seized and the chase was over less than 25 minutes after the alarm was raised.
The traffic on Mimosa Drive and Macleay Street was then allowed to pass through.
Wagga Police duty officer Inspector Mick Rochester described the alleged weapon as a home-made pipe gun.
Late yesterday, an 18-year-old man was charged with using a prohibited weapon.
He was bailed to face Wagga Local Court in July.
Two youths were still being questioned and helping police with their investigations last night.
Insp Rochester praised police for their response time and rapid arrest of the suspects.
Ambulance district officer Eamonn Purcell said the ambos at the centre of the scare were rescue officers who were training on the hill near the water reservoir along Lord Baden Powell Drive.
Insp Rochester warned residents that home made 'pipe' or 'spud' guns are prohibited weapons and legal action will be taken against anyone found in the possession of these types of weapons.'
So basically what happened, is some idiots decided to fire off their spudgun on the hill (it isn't some sort of bushland in the middle of woop-woop, there are bike and walking tracks around the place where there are often people. The kids were irresponsible, it is a really stupid place to shoot a spudgun), the ambo crews training heard it, mistook it for a gunshot, and the police reacted as if it were a real gun. The kids panic and are chased before being arrested. Then of course the gun is treated as though it were an ak-47 and presto, more negative press for spudding. It's idiots like these kids who give us all a bad name. Of course, they always refer to the gun as a 'firearm' and never mention the primary ammo is chunks of potato.

Yeah you're right. We need to get out to the press that we come in peace, that we aren't like the rest of them, that we are safe and responsible, we need to....make a nude spud calendar!
Just need some girls in bikini's holding some launchers... |
