I use presta valves off bike tubes, because they are always metal - and come threaded, which is good.

Yeah same here,they do let in more air but at higher pressure i find they're unreliable and can't take the pressure very well.

Then you are using it wrong or have a bad valve stem. They are use on bikes for a good reason, that dont leak and are very reliable.
