Go with rubber bands.
You can use pulleys to have the string on top while the rubbber bands are tucked underneath the gun.
Use enough of them and you will outdo any crossbow.

That's what I was thinking of doing with the crossbow I made, since one limb is cracked (getting dangerous).
I will probably use surgical tubing or same type thing but they come in thicker sizes for Exercize bands(sometimes cheaper than just the tubing).
I was planning to add a metal plate with holes drilled in it and put bolts through with slightly larger diameter than tubing and slide the tubing over the bolts. They sell rubbery plastic bolt covers too (they're mostly used for playgrounds or protection from the sharp edges of bolts).
I was thinking of bolting bearings through the body and wrapping the tubing around them and running a short string between the tubing.
Beeman sold a slingshot similar a long time ago.
BTW Also there was a dart gun that used them and had a piston inside to compress air to fire the darts.
I may use more than one band on each side. I'll post some pics when I get finished to explain.
oh yeah sort of like a compound bow! cool thats what ill do thats perfect because my fibre glass rod if starting to splinter and break. ill draw a diagram later of what i think you mean unless you post a pic in the mean time.
Thanks guys
