Ok so I've been working on this bass since before christmas now, and today its finally come to an almost complete stage. All that needs doing is connecting the pickups, putting the jack in for the lead and putting sort of finish on it. This is the first guitar I've made but im most likely going to make quite a few more in my life. The neck is off a hohner lx900b rockwood bass because the neck is the hardest part to make so I decided to use a bought neck for my first bass.

Now for pics from different stages during the making process, altogether its probably had about 48 hours work on it but its taken me ages because ive been busy with college so only been doing it in spare time.

The block of wood i started with, its inch and a half thick sapele which i got free from college.

After i cut the main shape out on the bandsaw, you can see the drawing on it which is what i used to know where to carve

It with all the carving done and the neck resting on it, I used vandyke die to color the black parts.

It after i routered out the pickup holes and the neck thing.

And finally me holding it, just need to do wiring, pickups and finish on the wood...oh and buy some big chain for the strap.

Nice Axe! You should sand that thing down a bunch and give it an air brushed candy green and black paint job and multicoat poly finish.

Chain for a strap? ...why...the instrument is heavy enough as it is. What kind of pickup and bridge are you using?

I'm sorry, I'm not all for the exotic shaped guitars used by modern bands. I do have a STeinburger Spirit and hope to learn how to play bass as soon as i master guitar. I must admit that you have done an excellent job though

If you want to learn bass and begin well, then start off with guitar. It'll improve your dexterity no end. Better yet, do what I did and learn them both at the same time and then alternate.
Great job mate! Must've taken you ages to carve, looks like it was definately time well spent.

Looks like an awesome bass.
Your Dragon looks a little like a wolf if you changed it a little.
Maybe you could put red light(s) for it's eye(s).

That would be cool if you could hook your ram-jet to it somehow Wink

I used to play bass. But I started working too much(long time ago).
It's funny because I love heavy metal again lately.
Maybe from watching too much Metalocolypse. Razz Cool

Very clever, I'm damn impressed at your wood work.
I'll say this for it - it's certainly unique.

How long you been playing?

Thanks alot for all the great comments, i really appreciate them. Ill try to answer everyone who asked a question but if i forget any i'm sorry.

Starman: That color paint job would look pretty cool. It is pretty heavy but i just fancied a chain to give it a final touch once its finished. The bridge and pickups are off of the hohner which i got the neck from, i wouldn't think there particularly great but i can't afford to buy better ones just now.

Thunderlord: Haha yeah a ram jet bass would be very interesting indeed, a small flame thrower going up the back of the neck would be quite cool though, then i could have a fire breathing dragon Very Happy

Spuddin: Thanks alot man, I would love to be able to make guitars for a living and sell them to people in the music industry...maybe i will eventually, still plenty of time to get that far though cause i'm only 17 at the moment.

Ragnarok: I havn't been playing very long but I do alot of woodwork and i just bought myself a set of carving chisels and fancied making something, so when i saw the hohner bass in an antique shop for £50 I decided i'd make a bass.

Thanks. Mostly into classic rock and metal, but occasionally listen to other stuff.
