Fnord's Hybrid

This is a no-burstdisk hybrid which uses a piston and spring to retain pressure. Although it is in an experimental stage, it is still fully functional. Today I did dryfires at 1.5x and 2x mix to make sure everything was working properly.
I am currently making a new piston (the first one was quick and cheap and eventually blew an o-ring) and hope to get it working at 4x over the next few days.

Materials/construction
The chamber is made from 2" sch40 iron (I'm looking to upgrade this). The fittings are steel, iron and brass. It ended up being fairly heavy for its size (probably about 12-15lbs)

The piston is housed inside the brass pipe below the tee and is forced upwards untill it vents out the barrel (it shouldn't be that hard to visualize).

Ignition
The ignition uses a camera flash dumped into an ignition coil to produce around 30kv.
The flashboard and capacitor are contained in the handle and the battery is stored behind the ignition coil.

Fuel
The propane meter is detachable and adapts to anything that has a schrader valve.
This part was a royal pain to construct, as none of the stores around here sell propane tank adaptors. I had to cut apart a broken torch and epoxy the hell out of it to get a proper seal.

Features
Almost everything is detachable, including the barrel, chamber, meter, and spring cap. The cap can be removed and the spring tension ajusted to allow for higher chamber pressures before it vents.

Notes/misc
This is my first hybrid, and was constructed for under $40 USD. It was made mainly from stuff I scavanged.
It looks ghetto, but I feel that a paint job will only make it look worse. I wanted a gun that looked very MacGyver-ish, but still actually looked like a gun. The end result looks very close to the plans I drew up during class (Ill post them eventually).

I feel bad for not being able to give live-fire test results/videos, but my budget money arrived too late and I've only had 4 hours of sleep in the last 2 days due to the large amount of construction and troubleshooting Ive had to do.

Also, I think it needs a name. Feel free to post suggestions.

No way, that's sick. Is the piston in the top part of the Tee that holds the barrel?

I think I see virgin mary in the wood grain on the second picture.

If it matters, I wouldn't mind seeing this diagram. As to the launcher, it's obviously lacking aesthetically. Besides that I like that you incorporated a fairly new concept. While at first glance all the components appear sprawled, on closer inspection they are fairly compacted.

I'll be dogging my cannon but all I can say is D@#$ that thing looks sweet. If you do paint it, use the ceramic paint they use to paint engine block's, you can buy it at auto parts store's and it will cover the pipe nicley. I have a name for it The Steel Bullet I think it fits it good. any way good job keep it up.

That thing is totally boss sauce! Looks like something BTB would make, if he ever makes a hybrid.

Aesthetically lacking? Hell no! This launcher looks awesome! It has so many hoses, valves, gauges, and pipes that it just looks menacing!

I like it, alot.

Good idea Fnord, But it does need streamlining and a paintjob.I'm no expert in hybrids though but it was my first thought.

@pimpman, You must be Catholic. Or special. Idea

Did she have her nose? Last time I saw her(2weeks ago in Rome) a crazy Australian dude had knocked her nose of inside the vatican back in the 80's Razz

On another note, nice gun and im glad to see it uses a piston and not the typical burst disk.

Kinda reminds me of the rail guns on the Matrix (the first one). But maybe it wouldn't hurt for a coat of paint, to hide the rust on the threads or maybe a blue propane bottle with a shark's head on the end Very Happy Then again, just looking at it is now will tell anyone that it means business! I needs some vids to show just how hard your baby can punch.

Forget the paint, i love it just the way it is. It looking somewhat ghetto is like... part of its personality.
Its nice to see a real hybrid that actually uses the concept of a piston instead of a burst disk. I've heard the concept discussed before, but never actually seen it implemented.
Nice job.

that is sick Twisted Evil , you say it is your first hybrid also, you deserve a good chance at winning
reminds of my contest entry they're both kick ass, made with whatever the hell we could get, your first hybrid my first sprinkler valve pneumatic, you still need a new piston I still need music wire for higher mag capacity
