| Heh coil guns rock, I used to make tiny ones that fit in your palm, screwed with so many teachers when I was in school. They'd be sitting at their desk, when a 1/4" bearing would smack the wall behind them. Never found it was me, no sound, no movement heh, good times. |

Think it would be possible to make a micro coilgun using a piezo clicker to accelerate a particle of metal?
You could impale bugs with tiny shards of metal! |

| I think you need amps, not volts, for a coilgun... Not sure, though... |

Correct, you need voltage in the area of around 300-400 with a couple amps (though you dont measure a capacitor in amps), the pulse needs to be short and strong.
The smaller the coil/ammo, the more you lose power and efficiency. I did make a coil gun one time where the coil's OD was .25", it shot very tiny peices of steel wire (heh, I made a rig for it so I could tape the coil to my finger and run the leads down my sleeve to the cap/charging unit, with another set of leads going to my other hand for a trigger, always shot my friends with it ). Downside it was weaker than hell, only lobbed the wire chunks about 10-15 feet... Still fun though heh.
Google around, you'll find some great tutorials on camera flash coilguns. |

I have made two of these actually... first was simple like yours, exposed, but it had somewhat of a more symetrical coil, was very weak. I recently re-made it with the charging circuit inside a project box with four camera capicitors instead of 1. Power gain wasent that much... but it can lob a nail 10-15 feet. if i had some more ferrous ammo it could probably go farther.
the first gun:
Coil, its small but thick. i looked up the formula for the magnetic power of a coil, and a short fat one was more powerfull than a long thin one.
Whole setup... pretty ghetto

| How the are you going to make a "plasma gun"? That would be sweet as hell if you do, but I think it's probably a couple of centuries ahead of our technology. |

| I agree with dyi, a plasma gun is probably not a completely feasible project for a weekend warrior. |

i think he means a rail gun because when they are fired they shoot out a large volume of plasma wich would be good for disentegrating evil robots |
