I hope this argument is over, in my opiniun it's a waste of donateing members money and every members time to have to even look over a bunch of name calling much less read it.
Thats not what this place is for!

Pimpmann, maby you should have stated your intenchions and then locked the thread, so members couldn't wine/start arguments/complain about your moderateing style!!!

I hope this explains my discust with how far the exchange went!

1 more thing i would like to say to all members, try not haveing such fragile feelings about being moderated. Moderation is a part of life that has good reason for being.

I have a theory.

Those that blow off grammar in a place like this with justifications such as:

- "it's only a forum, I can spell/write properly when it actually matters"
- "as long as I get my point across, that is fine"
- "I'm normally a good writer, I'm just allowing myself to be lazy"

are actually poor writers with weak justifications that are used to ignore a weakness.

Look at any study: learning a foreign language, playing a musical instrument, solving math problems, computer programming, etc. These studies involve a certain amount of practice and repetition. Once this work has been put in, one would have to actually go out of their way to mimic those who haven't put in the work - it just becomes a natural part of that person. A fluent speaker of a foreign language doesn't have to work very slowly through sentences. A good musician doesn't have to think about the fingering for a note/chord - proper mechanics are just now a part of the way that musician plays naturally.

If you are misusing "they're/their/there", "you're/your", etc. This is because this is NOT natural to you. You do *not* have a handle on this. Stop with the lame justifications.

The good news is that it is super easy to master this, it is not complicated. One way to get a handle on these issues is to use every opportunity as practice until good writing comes natural to you.

So, writing here *does* matter. Writing *everywhere* does matter, at least until you no longer make these sort of common errors.

Not to be a stickler, because I am not one to make fun of people, but did anyone else notice the ironic misspellings in pimpmann22's post.

Ex: "sentaces" and "summerize" (as opposed to summarize)

I just thought that was kind of funny. No hard feelings though.

Irony and humour are often many leagues apart - this is probably one of those times.
Possibly because it is lacking in true irony - spelling mistakes do not really qualify as bad grammar.

Of course bad spelling to excess gets annoying, but bad grammar is the true scourge of the forum.
I will much sooner be annoyed by lack of punctuation, line breaks and capitalisation, than the odd misspell. With a misspell, it is usually clear what the person meant - but bad grammar can change the entire meaning, and it makes the whole post very difficult to read.
If a new person turned up with good grammar, but bad spelling, they are much less likely to be told to clean up their typing than someone with good spelling but bad grammar.

I don't mean to nitpick - but as a rule of thumb, when you're a member as new as you are, then questioning or commenting on the moderators is probably best left alone (at least for a while). You want to start off with the best impression you can, and using one of your first few posts to commentate is probably not the start you want on the forums.

When you get enough respect from the forum members, you can comment on them (but in a respectful and sensible fashion), but until then... learning is the order of the day.

And remember the letter "u" in favourite, colour and other such words!

Actually, that makes me wonder about the frequency of different letters between US english and UK english...

On that note, how many people here have spelt "laser" as "lazer", "lasor" - or even worse: "lazor"?
It's not possible to debate the "laser" spelling, as it's an acronym. Unless of course, you spell Stimulation as Ztimulation, and/or Emitted as Omitted - which you'd have to do for lazor:
Light Amplification by Ztimulation of Ommited Radiation.
Makes it sound like you've got a lisp, and it's working on the absence of radiation.

FFS!

Latin is a common root of many languages, but the same roots grow very different trees...

I have a list of people who piss me off when they misspell things a bunch and have terrible grammar. Razz Every time I see someone new who does it (there's a spellcheck for a reason), I pull up a notepad document (saved as "pissmeofflist") and add their name. There's quite a few people in there.

Actually, there are many languages which weren't/aren't based on Latin.

Latin was, as a language, not that early - several thousand years before that there were other languages.

As an example, Native American languages must have developed seperately from the Indo-european languages (which have roots in Greek, Latin, and many other sources).

The grammar of each is significantly different. Look at German, with a specific Male, Female and Neutral forms to be attached to nouns - whereas English just uses a single Neutral tense (like the, a and some).

An understanding of Latin can help to guess at meanings in many Indo-european languages, but there are many root languages, from which most of today's languages sprout. Anglo-Saxon, early Germanic, Norse, and Latin are all contributors to English's nature.
