I was looking at Clide's semi auto design for paintballs using compressed air and I got thinking that if you replaced everything with metal parts and just used the first slide you could have a burst disk type of gun without having to replace anything. The spring would hold the bolt in place and as soon as the explosion occured the bolt would slide foward and then expose holes cut in it and allow for combustion gases to pass through the bolt and propel the projectile out of the barrel. Anyone think that would work? If a good enough seal was made, propane could be used and going even farther, you could make it semi auto with the right fuel setup.

Hmm. Sounds plausible. I'd make a golf ball version first to make sure the concept works properly, then miniaturize it for paintballs. You could just make the poaintball one though. My thinking is just make sure there's no flaws with the design and that everything looks good. And a semi-auto golfball cannon would just be swet.

Semi auto golfball cannon would be sweet, but I am a compressed air builder and it will take me awhile to get up to speed on building a propane gun. Also as of now I am limited to 1.5 inch stock of steel so I cant go much bigger than paintball size.

Well that's always a factor. I think the only problem with the design would be making sure that enough pressure escapes through the holes before the bolt slides back. And to make it semi-auto I think you'd need a fast venting system to replace the combusted gasses with the new gasses.

Venting gases? Oh the downsides to combustions, but if you used a small chamber how long does that take?

Well it depends on how you go about doing it. If you're not worried about efficiency you could just have a hole that you could open for the gasses to escape from and just push them out with the new gasses, this would require them to be premixed. You could have multiple chabmers and have a pin on the bolt that somehow switched chambers after every shot, this would provide faster ROF, but slower reload time after the chambers were exhausted.

I really don't think you could make a practical combustion with this design.

Ok well then I will try and finish my gun with compressed air. Ill let you know how it works and if it chews up paintaballs, which it most likely will.

You could easily make it a semi with compressed air. The only way I can see that you could make it semi with combustion power would be with solid fuel, which is, of course, against forum rules.
