its far easier just to buy one although i can see where a problem would emerge if you were in Australasia or NZ. hmmm... you can buy just gearboxes without the gun, would it be illegal to import one of those? i mean without the gun body its technically not considered a weapon, right? i suppose you would need some good reason to import one (depending on how tightly they examine incoming packages) other than to shoot things.

Getting the teeth right and everything is not simple if you dont have a laith or good machenery. I had once of these gearboxes before and tried to fix it as one of the gears was worn down. I ended up not being able to fix it as everypart needed to be exact and perfect fit''. If I were you I would think of a way to power ur newest creation using a motor. It would be really easy using a cam or something. I have tried it and it does work its just that I want a airgun that works on 100% air now lol.

You might want to have a look at the Tamiya range of spare parts for their RC electric cars, if you have a decent model shop nearby they'll let you look all through the catalogue. There's a whole load of gears in there, and motors etc, and of course they've all been made properly to mesh well.

Hope that helps.

the main gear that pulls the piston back is simply a rack-and-pinion. it converts rotational movement to linear movement. toss one from an RC on a syringe plunger and your halfway there. getting your correct gear ratio is going to be the next problem, of course this depends on your spring rate. the stronger the spring, the lower your ratio needs to be to pull back your piston. this also depends on how strong your motor is. the stronger the motor the higher your ratio can be. there are also other design factors to consider, like rate of fire. this will also determine your gear ratio on your rack-and-pinion. as you can see in your gif, the pin/ramp combination on the pinion for the bolt has to be correct or you could face double loading of BBs or BBs not firing on the compression stroke.

good luck

I tried to make one once, in the end I just bought a second hand gearbox online - it was marked as "model parts" and came through customs no problem Smile

It's still in my parts box though, I never used it - mostly because shortly after I built my first BBMG and realised I would never get the same rate of fire or power out of an AEG.

That's what mine looks like, I'm in Europe but at the time when I got it the legal status of airsoft was a bit grey. I guess it's a matter of luck - how about looking ofr a P90 or Uzi gearbox, they're usually inline and not pistol shaped.

You could probably make an AEG from RC store... if your in brissy, you can go to hobby one and they sell metal gears and motors... connecting the gears together won't be too hard i'll try to draw a diagram or something soon lol... i don't have time... too much study atm

With some decent gears and motor, a good spring, a bit of ingenuity and a lot of epoxy it should be feasible to make your own - however again you can make a cloud/vortex BBMG with a lot less effort that will give you more power and rate of fire, though perhaps less portable unless you have a regulated HPA or CO2 supply.
