I tore one of these apart. The compressor is mounted on spring perches inside the housing.

What you hear, is a cast iron piece banging on the housing.

Pics of the inside can be seen here;

Good job, I've always wanted to take apart one of those.

There is another method that compressors use instead if a piston that type have a spinning part (forgotten the term right now) to compress the vapors also.

Btw I always wondered about if they could be used as air compressors until I read the post by POLAND_SPUD.
I could have gotten several for free but was too busy working in HVAC to take one apart. Sad
Thanks Wink Cool

Mount it on a bottom plate so it doesn;t fall over and you're good.

I'd bring an extra car battery just in case though...

uhhhhh... Freon is a gas, and is under high pressure, so it would leave entirely after you crack the system. How does it keep leaking it?
I think you are talking about it leaking the oil that lubricates it... Like he posted earlier you could buy an oil catch, or just have the hose run straight up for a foot, before turning.

ah k, it might be the oil... I am not sure. It did have an oily effect in water. The problem is that it also burned on my fingers:S O yeah, and it doesnt just leak out but it comes out like the carburator on an engine> half gas half liquid.
So you guys think there is no need to clean out the pump before use? I mean if you are saying it might leak oil then I could clean it out with low viscus oil right?

well you need the oil in there to lubricate it. If you were worried, you could empty all of the oil out and put new oil in, though that seems like quite a waste. Just let it sit for a day or two, and all of the freon that got desolved into the oil will come out of it.

Lol how did it burn your finger?

Lentamentalisk is right you don't need to clean a fridge compressor... what you are reffering to is most likely oil mist created by the pump...

from your description I get the impression that there is a lot of oil coming out... do what lentamentalisk said

and that should help... it's better to try using the hose first Wink

I just forked up my fridgepressor...
It just wouldn't pressurise for some reason, so I hacked it up and found there is a "regular"small compressor insside suspended by springs.

The anchor of the electric motor ( wich is HUGE compared to that of say a drill) was bent and wouldn't turn .so I took everything apart.Cool metal flap-checkvalves in the cilinderhead....other than that, it;s pretty simple and straight forward.

No more HP for me at the moment.

It looks like you could have it work without the shell and save a lot of weight and room. The shell is just a reservoir for the freon and lubricants.
The spring mounts could be used to mount the whole thing onto a board or inside a box.
Would be more convenient ( sp??)

hmm I am sorry to hear that you have some problems with fridge compressors... mine runs ok despite the fact that I abused it a lot... ( turning it 90 degrees while it was running, putting to much oil or running it continously for 2 hours)

@BTB your firdge compresor looked rather old and rusty - maybe that was the problem ?

@ant AFAIK gippeto cut a compressor in half and posted several pics of the insides http://s245.photobucket.com/albums/gg76/gippeto_album/Compressor/ - i understand that you haven't noticed a link to it at the top of this page ? Very Happy
