| Hey thanks you guys, for all the comments. With the help of brian I fixed my pump. PolandS and gippeto thanks so much, its so inspiring to c those pictures as I had no clue what the part would look like! Awesome stuff these pumps. You know we could actually try to power a bike using the pump, but then in reverse using an air reservoir! I mean if you know how much power the motor supplies then you will get about the same amount out of it>>damn! |

Running it like a pneumatic engine won't work.Both inlet and outlet are at the top of the cilinder.Pressure will push the piston down, while the outlet stays closed.The piston will come to rest in the bottom position.
Glad I could help, but now you have a working compressor while I don't anymore...
@ Poland: Yep, It was probably worn out already, having run for 30 years.
Then it suddenly had to perform like never before, so that must have killed it.  |

hey!! I've finished my college... from now on I can dedicate more time to spuddguning, yeah !!
I'll try to make another how-to on building a fridge compressor... This time with pictures for each step of building it.
@BTB keep looking for a new one - Maybe you should ask your friends to give you a call if they ever buy a new firdge

| Sorry to kick up an old topic, but what would I need a safety valve for? I know the pressure ratings of my guns and I have gauges on them too. What parts are a MUST to buy if i make one of these? |

The pressure pop off it for safety reasons. Please do get it just incase (you never know until it is too late). You will need a pressure switch (Once it gets to a certain pressure, it electrically disconnects the power), next you will need to get an air regulator (otherwise you wouldnt be able to dial a certain pressure). Last you will need all of the fittings, hoses and nipples to connect everything.

Can all these parts be found at my local hardware store? Sorry but Im a noob when it comes to safety valves and regulators so could you explain to me why i would need these parts and how the regulator works

to build a firdge compressor (on operate it) you need only the pump itself + lenght of an air hose + an on/off switch + 2 clamps + a either a quick connect fitting or a shrader adapter... that's the most basic configuration
of course it is a good idea to add a pressure gauge as well
buying a pressure relief valve, a pressure switch or a regulator is really up to you. It makes sense if you want to add a tank and you want the compressor to automatically fill the tank to a set pressure and then turn off. Depending on the type of tank (its rating) it moght be a good idea to have a pressure relief valve
bit first try to build it in the most basic configuration then you can worry about the rest |

| Yeah that makes a little more sense to me because I was thinking why i would need a pressure switch and regulator since I wouldnt be putting a tank on there. I think ill start investing in quick connect fittings. Do you guys think I could use a light switch to turn the compressor on and off? |

well it depends what type of light switch it is... I use one on my compressor but it has a water proof box so it's 100% safe to use...
but if it is a regular light switch that may not be the best idea
ohh one more tip -> ussualy in fridges there is a box where all the cables are connected... fon't throw it away it can be used for all the wiring |

Hmm....so where would I be able to buy a "safe" electric switch? Or instead of that. What could be used as a "safe" switch that i might find around my house. lol.

| well if all wires are enclosed in a kind of box it's ok.. but most light switches I've seen are not covered on the other side so all the cables are exposed and that's something you don't want to have |

Hmm....I'm having trouble finding a compressor. Does anybody know where I can get one for cheap? Somewhere on this site I heard someone was selling them for 50$ each. I would like it alot if I was able to buy one off of here. Maybe if someone has an extra one that they arent using, maybe that certain person is feeling nice enough to donate. lol...no seriously. Most of the junk yards around here are either auto salvage yards or metal scrap yards...  |

hmmm I do have one spare but shipping would cost you more than it's worth (and I plan to use it soon so.... sorry)
it seems that all these enviromental issues make it more difficult for you to get them... it's not like that in other countries
Quite a lot of them are being produced in china just like most things these days. We all know that chinese products are dirt cheap so I suppose that most sites or shops that sell them for 60$ or more must have got them for something like 10$ depending on how big their order was
I know it's rather impractical but it annoys me when importers want much more for the product than it really costs |
