Well, I just got back from a camping trip and at the moment I don't have the energy to do any work but I did just receive a length of 3/4" square PVC tube that I will eventually use to make the mags. My plan is to cut a section of the tube down the middle to form two equal sized u-channels, space them so that the shells fit inside, and join them together with transparent Lexan sidewalls. I have some music wire to make springs and some PVC sheet stock to make followers.
I haven't decided how to secure the mags to the gun yet, but I have a few ideas.
Update:
Decisions, decisions...
(Remote line configuration)
OR...
(Onboard air configuration)
What do you guys think? |

| I think remote line, it'll make the gun lighter so you should be able to lock onto different targets quicker, one of the hardest attacks to survive in HvZ is when zombies flank you from multiple sides |

I'm out of the challenge. FANG 3 will be finished sometime this summer, but I don't know when. I'm going to redesign it from the ground up to be smaller. The basic layout should remain the same.
By the way, great work PVC Arsenal. I'm really looking forward to seeing this gun in action! |

well now I'm expecting this competition to be open well into the summer, so you can still get it done in time,
anyone else completing something in the near future, even if you don't think it'll make it in time, tell me cause I wouldn't mind extending the time if it meant we could get another decent entry |

Wow PVC arsenal looks amazing!! in 3 days I'll be done with school so i'll be able to get some quality work done on mine.
Also, ditto on the remote line.
iknowmy3tables... I plan on entering a gun. Just have to finish up school before I can really get going on it. |

It sad to see you out of the competition, btrettel. I still look forward to seeing how the FANG 3 works out. I'm warming up to the idea of revolving turrets and you just might provide the inspiration for me to try one of my own.
Thanks for the compliments everyone, I appreciate it. I expect the gun to be finished this weekend if everything works out. Today I cut the u-channels and side walls. Tomorrow I'll assemble the first magazine. I've also decided on a magazine retention system. From handling the gun quite a bit, I noticed how desperately it needed a foregrip for better control. There is almost no convenient place to put your other hand when shooting. So, I came up with the idea of welding a 1/4" pipe cap to the bottom of the gun (threads pointing down), just in front of the magazine port. I will thread the sleeve end of a quick-release coupling into that cap so that it's vertical and the socket is on the bottom. Then, I will connect a plug end of the coupling parallel to the front face of the magazine with the plug sticking up vertically. The magazine will snap right into the quick-release while the quick-release provides me with a secure spot to rest my hand. I hope that explanation made sense...
Anyway, here are most of the components in all their glory:
All of the air fittings have been secured with high strength threadlock so everything stays in place nicely. I made the stupid mistake of putting threadlock on the gauge... and then threading the gauge in so that it was upside down. In the process of unscrewing it, I completely f*cked it up because the threadlock held it so well.
Video of just the pneumatic components operating:

Video of the whole action cycling dry:

While cycling the action, I discovered that the barrel/bolt was still a bit too tight of a fit inside the body of the gun. It completely seized a couple times. I will have to sand it down some more and keep the whole thing lubricated with WD-40. Corrosion seems to contribute to the problem as the inner surface becomes rough after being exposed to humidity.
The bugs I've encountered along the way so far are easy to fix... But I'm really hoping the thing feeds and ejects properly... It sucks that I had to come all this way on faith alone without any reassurance that the system would actually work. Soon enough I'll see if all the work payed off... |

| Damn... I moved everything related to this project into their own Photobucket folder. I guess that changed all the URLs. You can still see everything through the link in my signature until I correct the links. |

I made one magazine so far. It's pretty huge... probably overkill.
Just waiting on a constant force spring for the magazine. |

The magazine is just a length of 3/4" square PVC tube cut in half lengthwise to form two u-channels. The two u-channels are then spaced to accomodate the length of my shells (1.5") and joined with two sheets of Lexan using silicone. The attachment system is best explained by the pictures above.
I did a quick test to see if the shells would eject properly and so far everything's looking good. I had to simulate the force of the magazine spring by hand, but it's the same idea.
Just waiting on that magazine spring and everything will be finished.
I might consider making the next few magazines smaller. This one should hold about 17 shots but it's a bit too cumbersome. The fact that I can load the gun via the ejection port reduces the drawbacks of a smaller magazine. |

Sorry for not getting back to you earlier about the spring. I'm busy.
McMaster-Carr indicates that I used 9293K42 in the first FANG. |
