What, you don't like my rapping chickens? Geez.......
Sounds are made by the movement of air. While I'm sure there is some mechanics causing small noises, the big dB producer would be whatever leaves the barrel. Letting several cubic feet of air out of a small orifice (hee hee, dirty sounding word!) all of a sudden, is bound to create some pressure waves.
Sound travels through air like ripples in water. Touch the water lightly and the ripples are very small. Smack the water with a fist, and you create big ripples.

| Pretty much what I was thinking Hay, this makes me want to make a real short barrel just to produce loud noise while shooting crap, best of both worlds. |

I get the loudest noise with my bottleneck 1 1/2 inch barrel. It makes a loud squeak that sounds like a thunderous PA-QUE ! It hurts your ears, and echos across the field. with no ammo in it. With ammo in it, you can not even hear it.

I find I get more noise with a longer barrel and better, tighter, fitting ammo.
