SPUDINATOR MAULER
Provided By - Spudinator
Here is the Mauler in the form that I am most impressed with, taking only about an hour to transform. If you liked the old version, then you will love this.
Had the urge to get my old combustion mauler up and working, and I did so. I figured Ihad enough cash to build a fuel meter and buy a 2" union, so I went out to Ace today and bought all the supplies needed. the specs are as follows:
40 Cubic Inch Chamber
single spark ignition, BBQ' igniter
Single-shot fuel meter for 3bar/3x mix
onboard propane
Regulated Air Inlet
2" sch80 union
Mountain Dew burst discs (all I've tried so far other than foil, which leaks)
Thats all the pics. I've shot it twice now after a cure time of about 8 hours with a 1.5bar/1.5x mix and it really whoops ass. loud as hell and kicks like a mother when shooting apples with wadding to keep them from being destroyed. I cant wait to fire a 2bar/2x mix, or 3x, but I'll have to, dont want to go to the hospital for pvc chunks all stuck in my face.
Pretty slick gun for only about $100-$120 construction costs.

| From what I'v heard, union failures are pretty low energy. I'd at least where safty glasses, though - it doesn't take much to seriously mess up your eyes. |

hmmm, apologies for such a late reply to you all, I have had some computer problems lately.
Yes, I am very regretful for having to dismantle Mauler, It was a VERY impressive gun (from your's and my friends points of view), but the recoil, the risk, and the constant nescessity of fixing various components was just not worth it.
Devilsmed98- I fired very few distance shots, I was afraid of the projectile landing in a populated area (even though the closest area that anyone lives on is about a mile away), but I did happen to test a few impact scenarios. The first was a cement cinder block, which are very durable/tough. The projectile was a large frozen apple (the only projectile I could fire from its 2-1/2" barrel that would fit tightly), tightly cut and fitted to the bore of the barrel. The fuel mixture was a 3-bar/3x mix, with the target approoximately 20' away. Measured velocity of the 6-ounce frozen apple was 750 FPS -Avg. The cinder block was transformed into a large number of small cement fragments, with a few remaining large peices.
The noise was deafening, the visibly apparent energy transfer terrifying, and the recoil was, without a doubt, the worst I have EVER felt, akin to no firearm/spud cannon in existence. That one shot was enough to make me consider my sanity on the occasion of firing it again (total number of shots firing frozen apples at a 3-bar/3x mix was appriximately 4). After a single shot, the entire area of my shoulder that was resting against the stock turned black and purple only minitus after firing. I never fired more than two shots in one day.
Mauler truly was a cannon of awesome power, both very efficient and mobile, but its downfalls proved to be it's undoing.
Thank you all for the positive comments, they are appreciated greatly. |
