Update: I shot a wire dart through a quarter, through a life jacket, and into the moulding on my floor.

Sorry for the poor video quality. I was trying to do two things at one and didn't keep the camera right on the subject. And my flashlight (I did this in the dark) made the quarter a little too bright. You can barely make out the hole in the quarter, but the dart stuck in the wall is clear.

I'm impressed. More videos and pics later. I have to see this a few more times!

Edit: better video:

Shot was done at about 35 psi. The dart went through about 3 1/2 inches. The wire is 4 inches. Not bad. The shots at 50 were brutal. They were deep in my wall.

And strangely enough, the points are still very sharp.

Whoah, at just 35 psi? I'd say the original video is therefore plausible.

I just put a needle through a quarter with the minipump cane. Sure, the minipump is probably 100 times more efficient than that guys gun, but his probably has 100 times the power available. I get less air volume in that minipump than one stroke a bike pump.

Although his ball valve would only be cracked open when the dart left the barrel, it only takes a cracked open valve to provide full flow to a tiny barrel like that.

The power behind such a light wire dart is amazing. I would never have expected it to pull off something like that. In fact, the darts that don't make it through (most of mine have) just bend into strange shapes. They must stop dead while the momentum continues to act on the wire.

This makes me wonder what else can be done with these. I'll try with more quarters later. And then I'll build a .40 burst disc gun to see if I can break the sound barrier.

Looks like we've collectively re-discovered the reason why arrows are disproportionately effective projectiles for their speed and why the best anti-tank rounds look like this.

For those designing and making penetrating ammo, there is a significant lesson to be learned here Wink

Following on from the slogan 'There are times in life when the project at hand calls for the "bigger hammer"', my design philosophy has always been "you can always make a bigger hole" Very Happy

plausible, but that needle went in way to strait. I would of liked to see the "aftermath" right after he shot it.

it's possible he used a new needle to illustrate the hole.

The needles that went straight through the quarters in my test remained straight as they stuck into the soft backstop. The ones that stopped while passing through the quarter were bent.

I'm sure a few more shots might produce one that didn't bend, or as jack said, he could have used a fresh needle to illustrate the hole.

Hah.

I've just found a really good reason why I'm not going to get anything through a 1p coin irregardless of what you lot do to your quarters.

Quarters are made of copper and nickel, 1p coins are copper plated steel Rolling Eyes

A 10p coin however is reasonably similar in composition...

The 10 euro cents coins I've been shooting are made of nordic gold, mostly copper too.

The coin I penetrated with a drawing pin was made from steel, with copper and nickle coating
