So I was in metal shop thinking of a project. bingo make a steel vortex block. so i got it finish then it hit me what an idiot it will rust up. so now i'm going to make an aluminum one. my question is aluminum a good material for this project? it seems like it will last for a long time and being just heaver than Bondo. should work eh?
If you're in machine shop, tools, machines, blah blah.... Why not use some stainless steel? Sure it's kinda hard to machine, but it's harder than aluminum and won't rust as day in it's life.
Stainless steel will rust. It is much more resistant to rust than is iron but it does still rust.
Aluminum actually "rusts" faster than iron. But aluminum oxide forms a protective coating which protects the aluminum underneath from oxidation. Iron oxide flakes off of iron (or steel) exposing the metal below to oxidation.
