If you can find stump remover, it is probably the easiest option. However, in Canada where I live, KNO3 containing stump remover has been banned, and KNO3 is a pretty stringently regulated chemical here these days. I managed to obtain a few 500 gram containers of stump remover for $12 each from the local True-Ripoff hardware store a couple years ago, but according to the owners, that was the last of the stock they will ever have. My friends and I obtained endless hours of entertainment from those containers, with both the smoke bombs and the black powder that we (I) made using the potassium nitrate.

If you live in the USA, it might still be on hardware store shelves.

Alternatively, it is used frequently as a dry fertilizer in planted tank aquariums and hydroponics, so almost any hydroponics supply store in both the USA and Canada will have it for a fraction of the price of stump remover. A store known as "Atlantis Hydroponics", based in the USA, sold 50lb bags of pure potassium nitrate for $20 back in 2004, but I'm not sure if they still do. Common hydroponics prices for small quantities will be around $2-$4/lb.

Hydroponic and stump remover KNO3 generally is not technical grade (>99% purity), but it is damn close, generally around 98-99% pure, which is more than adequate for any pyrotechnic use.

Lamentalisk: It was 320g of large mesh KNO3 and caster sugar melted together for a better bond. If you live in the Uk, I can tell you exactly where to get the stuff for long lasting, large volumes of smoke producing KNO3. But I have no idea for the rest of the world.

You can buy visco fuse off Cannonfuse.com, or you can just put a lighter on it, it will catch.

Potassium Nitrate (saltpeter) is hard to get no matter where you live because it is the base in a lot of the things that go boom. My only alternative to this is using powdered zinc and sulfer. 75% zinc and 25% sulfer by volume make a mean rocket fuel but if you increase the percentage sulfer to, say, 50% then it should smoke more as it won't burn agressively but smolder more.

This guy sells Potassium Nitrate for $2 per pound, and will ship to anywhere in the USA for $5. He will also ship internationally for $10-12. It is certainly not hard to find if you look hard enough.

I know of at least 4 places in Canada that sell KNO3 for less than $4/lb plus shipping. One location will sell you a 55lb bag for $50, but you better live near them if you want it, because the shipping cost is massive.

If you live in a decent sized city, you might have some luck searching Google for "(Your city name) hydroponics". If you find a supplier, send them an e-mail or phone call to see if they stock it. Chances are they will, and the product will be essentially indistinguishable from pyrotechnic (technical grade) KNO3.

the moderators have deemed smoke bombs as safe and OK to shoot out of cannons, but all the other stuff pertaining to gunpowder probably needs to stop

I believe smoke bombs, if not falling under other rules, would be incendiary projectiles when fired from cannons.
