Kicking this up because I might have reconsidered my fears expressed above in terms of working with oxygen.

In practical terms, using oxygen at atmospheric pressure would solve many problems on the cartridge front, all the simplicity of a combustion cartridge that can be made of the same material as the barrel, ie be straight walled like a 9mm pistol round as opposed to bottle-necked like a 7.62mm rifle round, and avoiding the burst disk complication of pressurised hybrids - while at the same time having enough power and kick to make a cycling mechanism a worthwhile possibility.

Fueling the oxygen could be done in the same way as one would use a syringe for the propane/butane propellant so that's not a problem. A 6mm cartridge made of a 2 inch or so length of 7mm brass tubing would then become plausible undertaking.

I'll definitely be looking into this, first step is to check out small disposable oxygen cylinders from oxy-acetylene kits :)
