A hybrid hybrid cannon

Unread postAuthor: rp181 » Sat Mar 21, 2009 6:31 pm

So ha hybrid is a combo of a combustion and a pneumatic. Now its time to make a hybrid hybrid,a hybrid combined with a pneumatic =)

I am in need of a high speed accelerator, that is clean. normal hybrids produce unwanted byproducts. I do not need high power were solid explosives are needed, so why not a hybrid?

I want to do a light gas gun, but use a hybrid in the back portion. Any thoughts on construction materials, piston, burst disc ,etc.?

light gas gun:

Well, my first thought is why?

Could you elaborate on why you can't use a conventional hybrid, or even just a plain pneumatic, for what you're doing?
What needs a velocity so high that it can't be done with a pneumatic, but can't involve a hybrid?

You're signing yourself up for a lot of extra work doing it this way.

So do you want to use a hybrid or not? First you fret over the byproducts then you say "why not a hybrid".

A standard hybrid uses propane or MAPP gas and burns very cleanly. Why all the paranoia over hybrid "byproducts"?

As far as a real gas gun, I would love to see one built and shown here on Spudfiles. The hybrid will have to be scaled right power-wise for the piston size and light gas chamber length and your pistons are more than likely going to have to be expendable. Your burst disks will be a little challenging to get right and you'll want to consider the costs of your hydrogen or helium gas, among many other complicating issues.

Go for it rp...

Could it be for an injector to your railgun?

Don't know if this would help or be relevant, but now that I think about it DYI planned something similar to a light gas gun except it was made for compressing of oxy/hydrogen mixes to detonate instead of just a light gas. He planned on igniting via a hybrid mix behind a piston. There was a thread here on it, look up "detonation gun" and apply what you find to your LGG.

You people are so lazy :o
Who needs to do things the simple way? More work is funnn....
And yes, for a railgun injector. I want to mess around with high injection velocities to look at current rise stuff. I don't wan't to introduce any more unnedded material, it already looks like a really old BBQ after one shot.

I coul use hydrogen and oxygen for a really clean burning option, but like i said, I like more stuff to work with. Plus, I may be able to get a machined chamber (Imagine a ETC made from a 3" rod 1 foot long of stainless steel bored with .5" )

Totally random, but my site got hack-a-day'd, next step, slashdot!

A light gas gun? Seems interesting. I wonder how this works out on spudgun scale.
I'd go for a machined nylon piston in a smooth steel hydraulics pipe if you can get hold of that. For this to work out with alot power you will need to adjust your building materials according to that.
When done properly the railgun wont even be needed.

I was gonna make one! arg!! now we will be two!! I hope yours is better than mine!! cause that'd give me a reason to build another one! i'm planning on a 2mm bore....

blah, the railgun is a excuse (just like the science fair was an excuse for the railgun...
I looked around some more, it seems that the piston is usually HDPE. I have not seen anything on venting, is the reaction completely enclosed?

Yep its closed or else you would lose compression.
