My Hybrid Daydreams...

Unread postAuthor: THUNDERLORD » Tue Sep 15, 2009 11:22 am

So, I've been day dreaming up a Hybrid design:

The fuel (propane or mapp) enters the chamber at rear,
It pushes a (light weight) piston forward against fairly weak spring pressure.

As the piston moves further, a small port hole (equipped with check valve) becomes exposed and the pressurized air/oxidiser enters through that port, pushing the piston all the way forward.
The piston could be connected to either a bolt (blow-forward bolt for loading, or the entire barrel with hole at top for mag feed)...

At first I was thinking the moving piston would close a switch for ignition,
But now am thinking a seperate electrical switch (triggering) could be used for this.

For exhaust, I was thinking that a gas assist similar rod could push a check valve and vent the chamber(?)....

It will probably be built from 3/4" brass nipple pipe.
Any thoughts on that /replies appreciated!

Thanks "J",
Glad you comprehend the potential for this particular "linear motor" projectile design...

While a spudder such as yourself, (no condescending implied) has your life ahead to study, learn and excell at ... (I am jealous...)

Anyhow, the gas motor single cylinder 2 stroke for example maxes at like 8000 RPM...with this that would be 8000 effective shots (at 8000 Rnds.PerMin.)
which is unconcieveable in the firearm world...
not to mention they use a system that would make Rube Goldberg proud in coming up with the toxic procedure...

English analysis of Thunderlord's post:

At first the author does his best to stay on track. The reader is not suprised by what is being said and no tension is built "...the gas motor single cylinder 2 stroke for example maxes at like 8000 RPM...with this that would be 8000 effective shots..."
Now the author starts talking about slightly unrelated topics. For experienced readers tension starts to build as slowly the discussion gets of topic, many fear what will come next with be an example of so called "Thread hjacking". The author uses irony as this thread hjacking is done by the thread starter himself. Also as the tension builds clues are given for the reader to predict what will follow this is a form of foreshadowing. The post becomes of topic from spudguns as the mention of the "firearm world". The post becomes more of topic at the mention of making Rube Goldberg proud, "...use a system that would make Rube Goldberg proud in coming up with the toxic procedure..." Suddenly the reader is overwhelmed with an of topic mention of biblical characters such as "David and Goliath". The author strikes fear in the hearts of the readers as they know that the post will slowly sink into nothingness and disappear along with so many others. Tension builds up as the "the still most powerful nation" is brought up. The tension further rises as the author begins to use exclamations such as "HooooAaaaahhhh". At this point it is evident that the post is lost. The mad mutterings of the author's character continue as follows:
"2-5-8 the ENFORCERS!!!!
HAIL O HAIL THE INFANTRY....
THE QUEEN O BATTLE FOLLOW ME...
I LOOK IN THE SKY AND (I) WONDER WHY ????
SOME WILL LIVE...
AND SOME WILL DIE...
FIGHTING FOR LIBERTY...
AND DIEING FOR"
Now suddenly the climax of the extract is reached, in Capital bold letters the word "FREEDOM" is written. This shows the reader that the post has died a miserable death. The chants and mutterings that come before the climax can be seen as the post's last words. Tension now builds down and reaches a low point as the character explains the death of yet another post "I can't handle no beers".

This idea could work. Note that your still need a system to shut your air supply after the chamber is filled.
The concept is in its early stages and there are many ways to go, but keep thinking and sharing :)
You may stop the useless rambling though...

Why thank you. I have found a hobby now! Writing an analysis of every random post i come across that is deemed worth doing so. Back on topic.(oh and thanks for the cookies!)

The idea is very good. I personally like the idea of a single moving piston to have several effects, instead of having a one moving part to do one job. I think the idea needs to be refined and would be bore easily done on a lathe. Perhaps it will be my next project, as my semi auto mech is based on a similar concept, and it would really be awsome to create a semi auto hybrid gun! Thunder, how about you give us a little diagram of what exactly you had in mind, or to rephrase, do you have concrete ideas for a cannon or is this just the concept we are discussing, in which case i think it would be a great idea!

Perhaps the loading mechanism for the ammo should be further refined, as moving an entire barrel sounds a little too energy wasting.

By the way: My idea covers what psycix mentioned :D Haha, i need a drill press and i need ball bearings and then i'll start building!!!

Getting the piston to move easily could prove a trick. With all that heat oil/grease burn off would be a certainty. The piston might need a way of being re greased and serviceable easily without taking the whole gun apart.

Yeah, hadn't thought of that.
it will need a regulator (still) %$$#@^!!!
Unless the oxydizer goes in at useable pressure from a liquid source such as N2O maybe....

You're still just a Swiss Cheese head, in red longjohns IMO. :P 8)

BTW, passed out earlier and woked up like, "wtf?...Oh crap, I was on SF's again too..." (got an 8lb. sleep disorder lately, which is fine until I want to be awake) 8)
edit: maybe the piston could have a hole or slot on it that blocks pressure flow from the air port hole when fully pushed forward(?) (no reg.)
(Also, thankyou very much, to the mod who edited my ramble earlier)!!!

N2O

Be careful...
I think simple compressed air is the way to go.
Note that a well-oiled fridge compressor puts out a nice oil vapour, lubing your piston.

I'm reasonably sure something else may have been "well oiled" when that post was made.
