Rifling Machine plans!

Unread postAuthor: boilingleadbath » Thu Nov 08, 2007 6:12 pm

Found <a href="http://www.isohunt.com/torrents/?ihq=antique+rifling">this</a> on Isohunt.

Thought you guys might like to know.

I'm not sure about the legalities of the file; whoever planetcammed it didn't include the copyright... if there is one. It doesn't look like a professional publication... almost looks like someone posted the plans they used to construct their tool.

Ah great, BitTorrent. My Uni has a strict no Torrenting rule, so much as I'd like to look at it, I'll have to wait until I'm on a different connection.

Does that thing kinda look like a big cat to you?

The principle is sound (twist-guide rifling systems are used by some custom barrel manufactures even today) and I've seen machines similar to this in person.

***************
You'd have to change the cutter geometry, admittedly, for it to be practical for PVC...

a .02" per pass cut with an indexable carbide cutter (the type you'd use on a lathe) is what I typically use on a lathe, when cutting PVC. You would able to push it somewhat deeper...

Spudtech (used to) rifle their 1.5" sch 40 pipe with grooves about .05" deep. (determined by visual inspection of the spudtech stock photos) The grooves seem to have a roughly 90* corner to them, so we'd be using a square cutter here, rather than the typical triangle.

This means that a multi-pass cutting procedure is almost certainly required. If it's not, the cutter could be really simple; a metal disk (bore size) with a place to attach the carbide chip.

If multiple passes are required, it's more complicated, requiring either a method of moving the carbide chip about, or a series of precisely manufactured cutters which are used in series.

In either case (multi or mono-pass), multiple grooves would be achieved by rotating the cutter in relation to the cutter shaft, or by rotating the barrel in the clamps. Getting these grooves spaced uniformly or consistently around the barrel would not be important.

umm well usually we just play it by ear i really dont have anything written down, but what i can do is for everyone who has a really slow connection is transcribe the show and either post it here or on my website, but some of the stuff i will plan on talking to him about is why he can't continue his business due to the city ordinance, if he has anyone seriously interested in buying the buisiness, i'll try and get as much info about the rifling machine as i can, and any other tips and tricks that he has for us spudders

Even though he's trying to sell it, what makes you think he'd tell the world how the rifling machine works?

It would lower it's value to a buyer if its particular mechanism secret was let out.

Dude first off I'm not gonna ask him every little secret about the rifling machine, and second I do radio, it's my job to be able to squeeze information out of people. Jeol is a great guy and I'm just gonna ask him to tell me what he can about the machine and if you listen closely to what he says then you might get a clue on how to do it for yourself. I'm particularly interested in his cutter geometry, if you want to ask him about the cutting head on his machine.

BigGrib, please stop letting everyone know about the interview and conveniently linking to your website everywhere.

If I see anymore of this, I will have to remove all traces of your website from this forum. You are what we call a spammer.

Ouch, he does have a point though. I've seen a lot of posts with him linking his radio show.
