High pressure pump.

Unread postAuthor: warhead052 » Thu Sep 06, 2012 11:10 am

Would it be smart to convert this to a high pressure air pump? http://www.mcmaster.com/#2942T6 I know its made for oil, but could it be used to compress air with the proper modifications? I would assume so, as it has the basic parts, pump, pump head, possible multi stage, and connection ports. I'm in need of a pump, and if I could hit 10,000 psi with this, I would rather spend my money on this than $300 on an air pump that only gets 2-3,000 psi.

noway
it can gets 10000psi because you can't compress liquid
compress air is much more complicate

yes you can , but you will need thousand of strokes to get 100cc up to 1000 psi, thats if the pump had tiny dead space before the check valve ,
that pump did not have it because its used for liquid's !!!

Far_cry, I would reduce dead space internally as much as possible.

if you can do this ,then you can also build hpa pump.

take a look here for that hpa pump ,simple (if you have at least a lathe) and efficient
go into Testing and Development in the left side

What on earth would you do with 10,000 psi? 3,000 is more than enough for the most powerful airguns around, if you want more power than that then you should go hybrid, preignition pressure is easier to retain.

Most pumps get to 3600psi and usually cost closer to 200$ if you look hard enough. I agree with JSR, have you ever experienced what a pnuematic can do at >1000psi? It's more then enough power for an air gun. Anyway, have you heard of diminishing returns in pneumatics? Basically it says the power increase you get from doubling the pressure from 100 to 200psi is not proportional to the increase you'd get by going from 1000 to 2000psi. It eventually reaches the point where it's not worth the extreme effort for a small power increase. Go hybrid or go home :D

"Go hybrid or go home", more like go straight to prison... I would be using the higher pressure at an airsoft event for long range. I know I could achieve that with a hybrid, but I doubt people would like being blasted with 6mm buckshot, and about 2,000 bb's in the buckshot.... 10,000 psi isn't what I need, but it would be cool to reach that. I just need a way to fill larger tanks to higher pressures, without destroying fridge compressors or hand pumps.

The airsoft sniper rifle I built recently, at 8 bar with a less than 100 ml chamber I was getting a muzzle speed of 200m/s with a 0.25g BB. At point blank shooting, it can penetrate paintball protection suit and still make considerable tissue damage. I have no idea how did you considered get 10000 psi it's cool for a airsoft weapon, in no matter what condition. If you want to charge a large tank, it's even worse, high pressure -> low volume, it's more likely to get damaged than a fridge compressor.

You'd probably need quite a bit more money than the money you would save on buying the cheaper pump to contain 10,000PSI safely and efficiently. The only regulator I found with a price tag that can handle 10kpsi was ~$950USD.

Wouldn't be a problem, I carry 80+ pounds of gear anyways. We spend literally days on end out in the field airsofting, so you have to have everything you need, and then some.

I just need a high volume high pressure pump so I can fill small paintball tanks fairly quickly, and then use a regulator to regulate them down.
