Exterior-fitting PVC darts

Unread postAuthor: MrPotatoHead » Wed Jul 26, 2006 11:02 am

I have seen many different types of ammo including pvc rockets. Has anyone tried making a pvc rocket that would fit snuggly to the oustside of the barrel. In other words find a pvc pipe size that just fits in side another and use that as the barrel and the other as the rocket, so that the rocket rides on the outside of the barrel. This would allow for fins that would not be impeeded like they might while traveling down the inside of a barrel. You may not get the velocity that one would desire as the rocket would start at the end of the barrel. Your rocket would have to be longer to take advantage of increased velocity, but shouldn't exceed the length of the barrel.

Good idea, you could use 1.5" SDR21 as the barrel and 2" sch80 as the rocket.

Isn't 1.5" SDR21 too thin to use alone as the barrel? And if so as the rocket moves forward exposing the SDR21, wouldn't the SDR21 then explode?

The used of SDR-21 as a unsleaved barrel is disscurraged not for pressure reasons, but instead for flexability issues. (as it is infact rated to 200 PSI)
Infact, short barrels made from unsleaved SDR 21 rarely have any issues.

As to the externaly held ammo idea involving 2" sch 80 as the projectile... no.
It's expensive and muzzle velocity will suck - a condition that would not be improved noticably by a longer rocket.
Plus, think of all the dead space!

What about taking that idea a step further and making the rocket fit outside AND inside the barrel. This would ensure a pretty good seal, and would go quite a bit further, I'd think.

That would work better, dale. But it would be hard to make.

Uhh... shrimphead, that limmits the surface that it has to push on.
That's hardly going to improve preformance, unless you are using a really crappy valve.

Better would be putting an O-ring (or tight-fitting collar) on the end of the barrel.
