I guess this is goodbye.

Unread postAuthor: joannaardway » Fri Sep 14, 2007 4:23 am

Sunday will be my last full day in the UK. The day after, I'm off on a tour of the world on the gap year I mentioned a couple of weeks back. And this post probably also marks my last regular visit to spudfiles for a while, as I have a collosal amount of packing to do, and several other last minute tasks. I might make it in at some point over the weekend before I leave, but no promises.
If I find a good cybercafe somewhere on the far side of the world, I'll try and make a short visit here again, but those will be fairly few and far between.

I was originally planning to study engineering at University, but unfortunately, I fell short on the optimistic grades I had set myself for the high level courses I wanted to do, so with that the plans changed, and I decided not to go through the clearing process because I realised I could really use a gap year to just go and mess up other people's countries. Searching for a Uni place can wait until next year.

I'm sure you'll want to know where I'm going - and I see no reason why I you shouldn't know, so:
Given my limited knowledge of foreign languages, I'm sticking to English speaking countries, and starting with an easy choice, spending about three months in Australia. Given I'm over that way anyway, I'm going to be making a short month and a half trip to see New Zealand as well. And just to make a round tour of the world, I'm making several stops across the US of A for a couple of weeks each, then taking the horrifically long atlantic flight nearly back to home, and I'll be seeing Ireland for the penultimate month. Then finally I'll hop (or possibly more likely, fly) to Scotland, and I'll slowly take trains back down the country back to near London, with a last detour into Wales along the way.

I know it sounds like I've just chosen all the locations they have TV adverts for, but I did do far deeper research than that. My main critera were English speaking countries, with nice landscapes (at least, in places) and I sort of got carried away selecting off the shortlist. Besides, this will add 5 new countries to the list of those I have visited (The only country on the tour I have previously gone to is Wales). I would note the exact locations in the right order with the dates, but all the paperwork is nicely ordered at the moment, and I know that if I try to check it, I'll mess it up, or rather worse, leave some of it here. And nice though those places are, being stuck there could be a difficulty.

At least for now, this is goodbye then. Hey, you never know, given I'm going to many of the places you forum members hail from, I could be wandering through your town in a few months - or even working there for a while perhaps. If you see a 6' tall girl you haven't seen before with straight light brown mid length hair, dark blue eyes and an (apparently posh, according to some people) Southern English accent, that might, just might, be me.

That leaves me with just one thing to say... Just a moment... *Gets out sunglasses*... I'll be back!

No the thing to worry about here in Aus, are the bloody stinking magpies!
I don't mind them if I can see em but a surprise swoop at the back of the head makes you jump

Where abouts in are you going when you visit Australia?

I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges.
Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before.

Ah... New South Wales. Although how much it is like Old Wales, I don't know. I'll tell you some time.

@Marco: Oddly enough, that's my first stop. I'm (supposed to be) landing at Kingsford Smith International on what I think is my Tuesday, but perhaps your Wednesday. However, I'm not in Sydney for long, I've only allocated a day to try to get over the jet lag, and a couple of sight seeing days there, and so I think a meet is unfortunately, not really possible.

And guys, I do have access to Wikipedia here, so talking about drop bears isn't going to cut it.

I made some American kid at my old school believe that there were dropbears in the trees at the school and that we lose a kid a month.

Scared the bollocks off him. Priceless. :D

It might work if it's not simple to just open up a new window, find Wikipedia on my favourites, then just type in "Drop bears". If you start talking about something I don't know about, I'm going to look it up.

No, Sunday is my last full day, but I've got loads of organising and packing to do, which comes before spudfiles I'm afraid. It's still friday here now. About 11.30 AM
