Does a deodorant can explode in a cloud of shrapnel if you puncture it with a projectile?

what about the marble in spray paint cans? isn't there a possibility of that flying at you?

Well I don't think it would come out at a high enough velocity plus I think only a fool would be that close to the Can when it went off to make it a damaging piece of shrapnel.

I'd just like to say at this point that the video I provided the can had no ball inside it) :P

@Marco; In fact I will do that this arvo and see what he says.

Marble? It's a small glass cylinder last I checked.

Also they're only in spraypaint cans, not deodorant.

Deodorant cans produce shrapnel only when struck by a high energy projectile designed to transfer a large portion of its energy to the target rather than pierce straight through. Such a projectile is blunt, reasonably dense, and traveling at high velocity. However, even with a AA battery fired from my Hybrid launcher, I have only been able to blast a deodorant can into 3 pieces, and each of the pieces traveled no more than 20 feet from their origin. A bow firing an arrow will NOT cause a deodorant can to "explode into a whole bunch of metal fragments". Your dad has no idea what he is talking about.

I didn't think they used marbles either, Alas the last can i tore open had two glass marbles in it (cateyes, must be cheap) they were 16mm and 16.5mm.

Other cans that i had opened in the past had like a little metal slug in them.

Edit: it probly won't help but you could tell your dad to eat a can of concrete and "harden up", also ask him if his mum used to dress him up as a girl, it would explain a fair bit about his attitude to all things "BANG"!!!

My worry would be the possibility of creating a fuel-air explosive scenario.

It would be an extremely unlucky set of circumstances to create a vapour cloud of the right density that meets a source that will ignite it at the right time, but you never know

Listen to me, bloody H&S!

Back to your question, the type of metal that deodorant cans are made of will NOT fragment. The notion of shrapnel being thrown out is ridiculous, because this isn't like a bomb where the explosion is caused by a massive increase in pressure inside the structure - on the contrary, we have a constant and fairly low pressure, that is released through a puncture hole that you're making. Assuming you keep a resonable distance between yourself (and any spectators) and the can, I see no reason why this should be dangerous.

Thank You, Jack. This is the kinda posts I'm needing to get.

I saw that future weapons a few months back.
Knowing what you just told me I feel lucky not to have gotten hurt when I shot the Can next to the Firelighter.

Thanks, for the votes and replies etc.

Seriously, the chances of getting the right mixture and ignition timing right are so minute it's probably more likely that you'd be killed by a falling satellite.

The dangers in this scenario are largely physical, not chemical. Hit a deoderant can with a hammer, it won't shatter but crumple, so shrapnel is certainly not an issue. In the unlikely even that the can tears along its middle, there isn't enough pressure to send the halves flying with any significant velocity. Again, you're more likely to be hurt by a projectile ricochet than anything the can will throw at you.

Hand grenades generate tens of thousands of psi within a brittle metal casing and are lethal to within a radius of 5 metres or so. Your humble deoderant can contains a tiny fraction of that pressure in a vessel already made to contain several times the pressure it's at.

In a nutshell, it's not as dangerous as it might initially sound to a concerned parent - though at the same time, I can't blame your dad for being worried.

i think what the whole theory of exploding deoderant cans is based upon the theory of "EXPLOSIVE DECOMPRETION" (anyone who watches mythbusters will know about that) the theory is that an object of high presure when punctured will split and send fragments twards you, how ever i highly doubt that a deoderant can has the presure to do this, if you want to get a small amout of explosive decompresion, shake up a pop can and shoot it with a pelet gun, the side that you shoot will rip open, but it will not send any lethal fragments

Explosive Decompression isn't a theory.

yeah, I do that all the time, it's pretty awesome.

Well, I'm pretty sure I can shoot a deodorant can now, without any trouble as long as I'm back a far enough "safety distance". say 7m or so.

Wow. I thought people got over the falling skylab chaos already. What was it? 1979?
