Two way radio jammer?

Unread postAuthor: )DEMON( » Thu Dec 06, 2007 5:17 am

I just had the most awesome idea to build something that would prevent the use of two way radios in paintball by jamming them. It would really be usefull for beating an opposing team that rely heavily on coms.

Is it possible to build a short range transmitter that can be worn as a backpack and jam radio channels in a very small surrounding area?

Yes it is possible and also Illegal in almost everyplace in the world.

You need a device which transmits onto every channel used by the radios and just fill it will static or continuous tones etc,I'm sure some one with some electronic skills can answer how to built something like that.

I'm not sure if it's illegal as long as it's below a certain power (range).

The way FM works is that the strongest signal will dominate, so you just need to broadcast a pure tone across all walkie-talkie channels and they'll be successfully jammed.

I thought it would be illegal. But ya, I want to build one with very little range so it would just upset radio frequency in a 15m radius or around there.

@)DEMON(; i strongly sugest that you doe not do this as it is against the rules of play. if you are caught at a scenario game jamming radios you will be thrown out of the game, this is what the rules say.

RADIO ESPIONAGE:

Radio espionage is allowed with the STRICT exception of the judges' channel. Messages on the command channel are in code, so LISTENING isn't a problem; it serves no purpose. Jamming of command channels is prohibited, resulting in ejection from the event.

Monitoring of the judges' channel is STRICTLY prohibited and will result in IMMEDIATE ejection from the event due to the fact that the urgency of the decisions makes coding them illogical and impossible.

Playing Tip: Monitoring teams' / players' personal radio transmission on the field can give you valuable information. Monitoring the Judge channel will get you ejected from the event.

i would sugest you read and understand the scenario game rules as every game producer and field uses them.

The easiest, and legal, way to jam a radio signal is to simply have another radio transmitting on the same frequency. Not real complicated.

Do scenario rules assign specific channel to teams? If not, then a team can transmit on any channel they choose. If one "happens" to be transmitting on the same channel as another team ...

the only ones that are asigned specific channels are the game producer, the generals and the referees, this is still a bad idea if for no other reason than for safety, scenario games are most often played on large tracts of land , and referees are not always around, what would if someone got seriously hurt and could not get help because someone was jamming radio signals. is winning the game so important that you would risk giving up someone elses life for it.

Ah, you guys have me wrong. I am not a noob, I am a very respectable player and emphasize on my skill above everything (I do play pump). And scenario paintball here is not as intense as the huge games you guys have on your side of the pond, unfortunately. You see, most of the time we have small scenarios with friends and I just wanted to look into building something like this because I think it is interesting and could be a useful and irritating gadget.

Grumpy, it seems that the very notion that I am being a poor sport or cheating is upsetting you greatly, I see you are a good player but you needn't worry.

Now back on topic.

So you say all you need to do is jam the right channel and two way radios do not disrupt fm radio signals as far as I know, so if you built a transmitter that only effected the two way radios and not all the radio receivers in the area then it should be all right to use it. Maybe there is a way to make it a directional jammer, a 'point and shoot' kind of thing.

What do you guys think?

you are right about that and that is how i got the nickname grumpy. but i was not looking at it a cheating or anything but as a safety issue. to me it is more fun to outwit oponents by feeding them miss information, to mess with their minds and one of the best ways to do this is over the radio. by the way my team uses handheld cb radios to comunicate.

I always liked psychology warfare (not - the act of listening in on enemy channels and diagnosing their personal issues, then charging them £40 an hour for it.

That really distracts them.
