My lil' ol' ETG

Unread postAuthor: rp181 » Sat Nov 15, 2008 6:08 pm

I made a smallish ETG, bank source is ~900J at 330v (voltage doubled mains), it will be taken to 2kJ later with a proper charging supply so i can go to 400v and use all the capacitors. All the pics, stills, and video's are here:
http://rp181.110mb.com/index.php?p=1_14_ETG-2

Here are some more details:

There is no chamber, the bottom of the barrel serves as the "combustion" chamber. It consists of 3/8in steel tubing, connect to a union, and connected to another short piece of tubing. Over all length is about 7in. A 12 AWG solid wire is inserted through the bottom, which serves as the electrode too. The bottom is not a very good seal, explaning the blast at the bottom. The union provides easy acsess to clean the electrode. The second electrode is the whole chamber.

If you browse to the ETG 1 page, that is my early attempts. The chamber/barrel is 1/2in copper, sleaved with 1 in PVC (mainly to insulate). The electrode is a screw at the bottom, the copper being the second. I moved to copper after my 1/2in PVC one exploded.

I have not fired a projectile, but with no projectile, it blasts through 2in foam, and burns foam away abit more, video is on the site i posted above.

I think its very good considering the crappy fuel (aluminum foil dropped down).

Post if you have any questions

sweet little spark shooter you've got there. I just love shots of sparks flying all over the place :)
Keep up the good work.

Do not look back, and grieve over the past, for it is gone;

As for 2kJ shot, im working on a 2kW (With my core, 10kW is probably possaible, but fuse is 20A ) power supply =p. Im also working on getting aluminum powder ( i might just sand down one of my useless heatsinks).

Nice work - I'll be interested to see the more powerful models.

But while I'm here... I think people have forgotten that more sections for the website is impractical. We have a lot as it is - even on my screen resolution the forum main page runs two and a half screens. Adding a discussion and showcase for electric launchers is going to worsen that - Not to mention that an electric section would see little movement.

Does that thing kinda look like a big cat to you?

Spudfiles is a great website with a great community that is for the most part educated. Most people don't think about comming on here to post their ETG or any other electric gun because they think this site is just for Spud launching.

I know if you created an electric section that people will show up, and more exsisting members will come out of the woodwork as well.

Not untill recently have I been interested in making electric guns.. The main reason I have found a sudden interest in making them is because of the couple that have been posted recently. So I dont think inactivity of the electric section would be a problem.

As far as having too many sections on the main page I can see how that could be a problem, with those who have bad resolution. Now im not saying IPLA is a bad section or anything.. But couldnt it be combined or a sub category of General Spud Gun Related? That would free up space for an Electric Section.

All I ask is you read that and take that into consideration.

I do the same as alih, I think if there was a new section, it would be just like ILPA or mini. I bet most of the threads will be "whats that?" and similar threads.

As for the ETG, im working on a contactor with 2 2x4x.25 in silver plated copper plates. With my two springs, by hand, i can pull it .5in.
