would leaf spring steel be good for making a big knife, it would be used for chopping wood and what not when I go camping. The spring is a heavy duty one from a ute if that helps. 55mm wide and 7mm thick

also how should temper it? or do you need to know the exact steel?

Jsr, thanks :) finnish is so different than english, its hard :D

Crna: mostly leaf springs are 5160 steel, its pretty tough if you do right grinding angles and good normalization, and differential heat treatment. I like to temper 5160 just like pure 0.8% carbonsteel, 200celsius and 1 hour, just put it in the oven. If you want extra tough 1 hour in 175c, then let it cool slowly and 135c for little over a hour

I see your point, but dude, carbon fibre! My Mk.3 hasthis hanging off its end, wonderful bit of kit. I've never tried to work with it myself but I definitely want to have a go at making rough epoxy casts involving CF weave and machining them to a fine finish.

im more to the traditional materials and methods

got some more work done with the 5" knife. Yeasterday i fitted the upper bolster and soldered it in place, today i fitted the rest of the handle. The hadle is brass, red polypropylon, barked reideer leather, waterbuffalo horn and dark walnut.

This image shows the soldering of the bolster, this is before i filed it down

here it is filed down, ready for some more components!
