Yeah, Co2,N2O etc. will do the same or worse. Or cause frost bite.
bESIDES THE high pressure having the ability to cut through and enter skin, even causing bubbles in the blood stream![deth]
Just something to be aware of.

It's called frostbite unless you are using a commercial non home refrigerant.
R12, 134a, & 22 are reasonably harmless except as a liquid where the risk is frostbite.
Note many refrigerants break down into dangerous acids. They break down if overheated.

Like Technician said, most freons are relatively benign. Heck, that's part of the reason they are used. Very low toxicity, flamability, and chemical reactivity, great solvent for grease etc. When in doubt as to the perfect solvent for a particular application use a freon.

Only real danger is frostbite, and then only with the low molecular weight freons. Heck, even the danger of a high pressure leak penetrating the skin is fairly low since freon based compressors operate at fairly low pressure. It's hydraulic systems that are at several thousand PSI where you have to worry about a leak punching the fluid through the skin.

while working at home depot i got frost burn all over both hands when a propane tank from a forklift sprung a crazy leak (some idiot didn't screw it on right and i was idiot enough to trust him). it was spitting out a lot of liquid which quickly vaporized. i had to be the hero and stick my hands in liquid propane to close the valve. after my skin defrosted it felt like i had stuck them in open flame and decided not to take them out for a gratuitous amount of time. the purple and black flesh peeled off after about 4 weeks.

fun fun fun

I Highly doubt a chemical burn is what you have, a frost bite sounds far more reasonable(heck they look and feel about the same!) Still doesn't sound very pleasent. Serious take soem pics, it sounds like a cool thing to start at.
@I-will: OUCH!

You have frostbite. A freeze injury generally looks about the same as a burn.

There's absolutely no way it "burned" you in the sense of a hot substance burning. What you have is most definitely frostbite. Basic chemistry tells us that any pressurized gas cools as it expands rapidly.
