The shockwave effect is observed to some extent with all pressurized gas releases. It is easier to make a loud boom with combustion devices, due to the hotter and thus faster expanding gases, but pneumatics can at least partially make up for this with higher pressures.

DYI is correct however; the sound quality of combustion devices is noticeably better. My high pressure (300+PSI) pneumatics were pretty loud with the large C:B ratios I built into them, but none of them could come close to matching the bomb-like sound and roaring echo of my <100PSI advanced combustion.

Of course, the best way to make noise is to use high temperatures AND high pressures. :D

Oxy-hydrogen balloons might do the trick as well.

I absolutely love the sound in that video; probably the most realistic sound capture I have heard from a handheld camcorder.

The really cool part about hydrogen/oxygen balloons is that you can tie a fuse to them and just let them fly away...

Tie a bunch of them with about 6" of green safety fuse each, then tie them to a main fuse with about 1" of space between each secondary runner fuse. Tie the main fuse to something at one end, then light it at the other. As the fuse main fuse burns, it will release each balloon with a burning fuse that will trace up, and BOOM.

Those people must have suffered some ear damage.
Sometimes it's worth it though...
