Stick with small bores than. Many sputters live in less than ideal locations for our hobby, but we all get around it. Most notably; jsr seems to reside in a very residential area, so He just builds minis

Yeah, I live in a city to, neighbors are not a big fan of golfballs being shot across the yard and thousands of bbs being sprayed in the air, you can always make pen guns though.

Interesting how when I moved from an acreage to a residential area, I started building larger, more powerful and louder cannons...

In that case, isn't it more of a hiatus than retirement?

As was pointed out, there's plenty of spudding you can do within the confines of a residential area, indeed it's an impetus to build more compact and quiet launchers that is a challenge in its own right.

As to fearful parents, fear usually stems from lack of knowledge. You can either involve them (for example let dad fire a couple of shots, usually works ;)) and make them aware that you're developing your DIY skills and applying practical physics at the same time, or keep the true power of your launchers hidden - not the easiest option when holes start appearing in the furniture

Choice of ammo helps. Pick up a shooting chrony and build a competition marshmallow launcher. The power with jawbreakers will be our secret.

I tested the T shirt cannon in the local park and brought the competion rules and posted them. I got no complaints and a few interested kids and parents. It was sporting equipment at that time. :D

I also have had to cut back on spudgunning... First it was paintball, now it's a jeep... The thing is, new spudguns seem to be appearing all over... :?

I'm afraid now of homebuilt high pressure pumps...

Before I had the knowledge of the damage it could cause to my frikkin' face I wasn't...so how's that?

Go small and build a muffler..

You can still have fun without the big boom..
