science olympiad sumo bots

Unread postAuthor: twizi » Sun Sep 19, 2010 10:17 am

heys guys i was wondering if you guys have any idea its like battle bots but smaller grade
voltage can only be 14.4 volt so no coil guns or nothing like that.
i was gona use tread and independet steering like a tank
for the weapon it cant be sharp have flames or be magnetic
my idea was to use a sprinker valve to fire a rod that would not leave the barrel but puncture the other bot my rod materal was to use cold rolled steel and fire it at 100 psi.
my chasis would be made out of steel, wood, and lexan
for the tank like traeds i was gona use a motercycle belt.
and i was going to use 2 drill moter and a car battery for power
any other idea or tips

I think you should use a QEV + solenoid powered DCV to operate an air ram. It would be more compact plus you'd get more power for your PSI

Due to the length of the matches and the size of the battery, a couple of starter motors will provide way more torque than the wiper motors. Is there a speed and weight limit? The controller for the low impedance starter motors will be a challenge but is well within the realm of possible. A heavy sumo bot with lots of torque and low profile is a mean contender. A rod on your window washer motor could be set to reach under the opponent and then lift to flip him over. Use leverage. Get an edge up and then ram under with sheer speed and power. It may be possible to toss the opponent out of the arena. Good luck. The problem with air on a battle bot is air supply and a limited number of strokes. Use the big battery. Use the power.

i thought about this but then we found out about how it has to be 4 pound or less the bot can also be 40 by 40 cm but the weapon can extend past this but it must retract back into it and be 40 by 40cm limit

the bot can only way 4 pound so it preety light so that eliminated a car battery im thinking a 3600mah 9.6 airsoft battery

Your best bet is probably just a ramming bot. You don't have much weight to play with, so I'd just make a big armor-plated wedge on wheels.
A more complicated the weapons system will just leave you defenceless should it fail to work as expected.

Since you don't have to worry about fire, thick layers of fiberglass will work just fine for armor. 2 pounds of fiberglass on a small bot will be nearly bulletproof (provided you do your job making the internals tough also! No skimping on the soldering work!)

Wheels are probably better than tread in this case. I don't think extreme traction will be necessary unless you get to push the other bots into a pit or something.

hum that sounds real complected if i were you id try and keep it simple or the next thing you know your building one modification then a modification for that modification but if you think you can handle it (me id keep it simple), and you might want to add some wights to keep it stabilized i mean do you know how much recoil both a spring loaded hammer and a pneumatic rammer creates (a lot  ). and have we forgotten robots greatest enemy WATER.
