I've toyed with making a hybrid. A vertical engine can be coupled to a high amperage alternator and drive E Wheels for an all wheel drive solution. Only downer is the cost. :(

One reason I considered a hybrid is with a Li-ion battery pack, a temporary high torque energy supply would provide much higher starting torque and acceleration with a relatively small gas engine. The result is lighter weight and higher performance. An electronic speed controller can provide a transmission function for high torque starts and high top speeds. But as mentioned earlier, it's expensive.

Make a monster scooter and use the/any 4 stroke engine. If you go with the weed eater engine your going to get aggravated with the performance...

I was going to put a 15 HP engine on my bike a while ago. Then I realized that I don't have disk brakes...

As to the E-Drive, I have a weird question: How do motor controllers turn high voltage low current from a generator into low voltage high current for low speed motor power? I don't think a transformer is involved. How to SMPSs do it?

Try a chain saw engine. It has a sprocket to run the chain, so a simple conversion to switch to running a tire won't be that hard.

Actually, Chainsaws use the opposite of bicycle chain. the chain has the teeth, not the sprocket. However, I had hammered a bicycle sprocket from the rear of a little girls bike I found. Worked GREAT but the bike I had made it for fell apart and I needed the chainsaw to cut a fallen tree(limb). Huge limb.

No crap, I knew that... What I meant was, use the sprocket that is connected to the motor. Or, if sprocket is the wrong word, the gear...

Have you ever actually seen a chain saw clutch and sprocket set up?

Yeah, I took one apart last year. It was an older model, maybe from around 1990, but it had a gear on it and I could of used it on my bike if I wanted to.

A chain saw sprocket will not match up with a bike chain. 2 different types of chain.
