That's unintentionally worked for me in the past. In-ear earphones aren't uncomfortable at all and they'll fall out well before you wake up.
I wouldn't worry about waking up your room mate as long as you're not getting up at unnecessary times (getting up at 6 for a 7am class or whatever is fine), he has to deal with the fact other people have classes earlier than him.
SB15's light idea wasn't bad either.
