Spudfiles IRC Channel

Unread postAuthor: SpudBlaster15 » Sat Aug 02, 2014 4:31 pm

I've created a Spudfiles IRC channel for chatting, it can be found on the freenode network at ##spudfiles. Feel free to join and chat, it's completely open at the moment, but I recommend registering your nicks with the nickserv.

For those unfamiliar with IRC:

You need a client, for example Hexchat.

Windows/OSX: https://hexchat.github.io/downloads.html

Linux: Use your distro's package manager to install the hexchat (or xchat) package.

Once installed, launch the client, you should see a window that looks a bit like this. Fill out your name and select freenode from the network list. Click on Connect.

You should now see this screen, where you can enter the name of the channel you wish to join. If the channel selection dialog does not appear, go to Server --> Join a channel and enter ##spudfiles.

Finally, click OK and you should be joined.

To register your nick, type:

/msg nickserv register <password> <email@address>

Advantages over current chat

-No stupid 'new topic' spam cluttering up the discussion
-No 15 minute session timeout
-No 10 second refresh delay
-No need to launch a full browser session just to chat
-No need to be simultaneously logged in to spudfiles.com
-Selection of usernames with the ability to register and password protect
-Ability to ignore or kick/ban undesirable users from the chat
-Availability of various modes and actions

-No IP cloaking is used by default on freenode, so your public IP address is visible to anyone in the chat, while on SF it is only visible to admins and moderators. This can potentially open you up to attack, but shouldn't be much of an issue if your network is secure (ie. you don't have any ports forwarded from your router to vulnerable services on your PC). If you want greater anonymity I recommend using a VPN or connecting to freenode's hidden service with Tor. Once SlashNet fixes their channel registration I will move it over there, as it uses auto cloaking.

Happy chatting, any questions/criticisms let me know here, or drop by the channel. Also, if any of the reputable members here are competent at running an IRC channel, I'll make you an op.
