HOMEMADE PARACHUTE

Unread postAuthor: M3NT4L » Tue Oct 03, 2006 7:11 pm

i am making a ghetto parachute to deploy as i jump a 50ft drop from a bridge to water( only reason making the parachute is elongated fly-time)
it needs to be powered by some sort of pressure that can be released in an instant, i was thinking paintball co2 but i know there has to be a better/safer way. I NEED HELP IDEAS PERTAINING TO THE PRESSURE ISSUE and if you want to the whole project your help is appresiated  here is a little drawing, oh the casing is made of pvc, and there is a wadding like thing to furtherr propell the parachute.

I dont think it will open fast enough because, correct me if im wrong, Things fall at 13 feet per second. Why not make a hang glider?

if things fall at 13 feet per second youd hit the water in under 4 seconds

The force of gravity causes things in free-fall to accelerate. The longer something is falling for, the faster it falls.

In a friction free world, one can find the fall time using this equation:
D=VoT+.5at^2
Where D= displacement, Vo= initial velocity, T= time, a= acceleration,

If you plug the numbers in, you get this: 50ft=0t+.5(-32.2ft/s^2)t^2
Your initial velocity will be zero if you don't jump or anything, so that cancels out that and the first t. If you divide the acceleration by two, you're left with: 50ft=-16.1ft/s(t^2). Divide both sides by -16.1ft/s^2, and you have t^2=3.1s^2, because you can't have negative time. Then take the square root, and you're left with, t=1.8s.

Because I didn't take friction into account, you will be in the air for longer than that.

These seems like a really short time. I'm not positive that my calculations are correct, but I don't think I made any mistakes. If anyone notices anything wrong with those numbers, please tell me.

just to correct you, the acceleration due to gravity is 10 m/s or 32 ft/s.
so after just 1 second of his jump he'll already have traveled 16 ft. After 2 seconds he'll have gone 48 ft. So just as a fyi your parachute is going to need to deploy DAND fast, otherwise, splat

Well said.

Isint there a limit to the lowest altitude a parachute will open enough to stop you from going "splat"?

in the upcoming presidential election, there will be several candidates who will be running, one of whom is Hillary Clinton. Now WAIT A SECOND!!! I though there was some sort of rule that prevented someone from serving more than two terms in office. Vote Against Hillary: Presidential Elections 08

I seriously doubt its possible to get a chute to open in 50 feet.

Why not jump with the chute already open?

Either that, or tie a 10-foot string to the top of the chute, and the other end to a solid object where you're going to jump, so when you get 10 feet down, it pulls the chute open? However, you'd need string strong enough to pull the chute, but weak enough that it'll break when you get to the end of the string.

Just some ideas.

Peace,
Pete Zaria.

I think it was a show called "Stunt Junkies" on the Discovery Channel. I think i remeber him making an air-ejected parachute to open up, but it was still atleast 75ft off the ground.

If you do end up doing this I hope you have considered the fact that if you were to get caught up in the chute once you hit the water you could drown, you can't really wear any flotation gear so just be really careful.
