Crashing Potatoes

Unread postAuthor: rl93 » Sun Jan 07, 2007 11:38 pm

I just saw an episode of mythbusters where they aim two guns at each other and fuse two bullets togeather i want to do the same thing to potatoes.

Heres a picture.

you get two guns exactly the same size wired two the same stun gun with the same amount of propane.

I think a potato would just fall apart. They are more brittle than bullets.

Well it just so happens that I also saw the episode. Quite surprising since I watch TV at max, once a week.

I might first start off that this idea is quite un-useful. As we don't have any means of capturing the event on a high speed camera, we'd just see a scattering of water-starching mass. Provided that you get both devices to fire there projectiles at the same time, and velocity. Also the degree of the launchers in the diagram, are going to make the happening of this 'collision', even harder. Best arrangement of the launchers would be to face them bore, to bore. Your accuracy can obviously be off by a fair bit, as a tater is 2" in diameter, versus the .57" I believe bullet they were using.

Getting the gaseous mixture to ignite at the same time is going to be a nightmare, or close enough to produce what you want in the time frame you want. Well I might spend more on the matter, but quite frankly I don't any tests are going to occur on the matter, so Ill save my time for the time being?

Who wants to bet?

Well if I was Adam Savage of MythBusters I woul say there is a.....

30% Chance the experiment doesnt go ahead
2% Chance of it working perfectly
18% Chance of the spuds missing each other
15% Chance only one chamber ignites
15% Nothing interesting happens
5% Chance the spuds miss each other and hit the other cannon
10% Chance of nothing happening at all
5% Chance you screw up the ignition for one of the guns and the other gun launches a potato at the gun that mis-fired.

So i'll bet 50SB nothing interesting happens.

So... instead of the usual potato mist you get... potato mist?

I can't see this being hugely interesting. At least firing lead bullets gives you two fused bullets afterwards.

Get one cannon to fire a nail dart and the other to fire a wooden slug.

Then we can see how that compares to conventionally hammering nails into wood. Much more useful
